Around here, a lot of the girls of Hispanic descent have a quinceanara to celebrate their fifteenth birthday. It's a big deal... many girls choose between this or an elaborate wedding, as the costs can be quite similar. |

I can't figure out the whole thing about "sweet 16" in the US. Priest, a pro photographer and a secondary one (you)? Let alone the crowns (tiara?) and bridal dress thingy. Looks like the party-industry has led you on a bit ;)
...what happened to normal teenage birthday parties? |

I'm glad I'm not the only one to feel this way.

That's what I said. And I wasn't a secondary photographer. I just always have it with me.
But Quincinieras are one thing. This is taking a normal american birthday and blowing it out of proportion.

I'm Canadian and I've NEVER heard of a sweet 16 party like any of these happening around these parts. Whatever! More business for us ;-) lol
I think the original shots are good, seriously, I wouldn't worry about having the subject always smiling brightly into your lens. Personally, I don't believe that's what photography is about. You're not really capturing the moment if you're constantly stepping in to give direction (ie, "look up, say cheese!"). That's more like old-school wedding photography.
My 2 1/2 cents. (I added the 1/2 cent for good measure) |

Lelani;
no offense, but could you not attach your thumbnails to every post. It slows down the loading time with us dial-up users.
Thanks.

Well, maybe you shouldn't be rude, hijacking someone elses thread. I've got a T1 and seeing all your thumbnails is rather annoying.

Actually, this is a thread I was participating in when Stepanie asked for input on her photos and I have been following it.
The originator of this thread politely asked you to stop reposting your thumnails throughout this thread. Instead of being polite in return, you had to respond with a snide comment about being on broadband.
So, since you obviously missed the point of my comment...
1.Have some respect for the person's thread you are posting to.
2. If you really want some critques on your photos, start your own thread for comments. Reposting all your thumbnails throughout the thread doesn't make someone want to critique them more, even if they have broadband.

Actually my response wasn't to be taken so defensively and surely not by you.
The originator asked as if it was done several times when indeed I only reposted once, and then you impolitely minding my business - posted your rude comment.
So since you surly missed my point....
#1 and the only one. Mind your own business.

How many times you reposted your images is not the issue, although it was three times in all. everytime you responded to your own initial comment, by clicking "quote" you include the images.
The issue is that when someone asks you politely not to do it (when I asked you), you didn't need to respond by telling me to upgrade my system. Not everyone has the money you may have.
Also, just like you are free to write whatever you want, so is cbeller, but I don't want a fight here because of a simple request. Please end it now. If you have a problem with my request, or what I've written here, you can either choose to ignore me, or Private Message me. Don't post it here.

I count three posts, all by you, that contain your thumbnails.
Is that necessary? They don't get any better when you repost them, they just eat up bandwidth. That may not be an issue for you since, as you pointed out, you have broadband. Some people here, obviously including the OP, don't and your reposting does create an unnecessary problem for them.
It's one thing to do something like that because you didn't realize that your actions causing someone a problem, but it's just plain inconsiderate to continue to do so after you have been made aware of the issue. |

Could you two find a quiet corner to fight in please? Thank you :)
I hadn't heard of Sweet 16 parties either, and I'm both Catholic and American, so I think this is specific to a sub-culture. I notice both photographers are from New York, and having grown up there, I know that most customs from around the world are there...
I like both sets, although I wasn't as fond of the slant in lelani's shots as some where... It felt a little like the bad guys hideout in the old batman TV show. But that's strictly personal taste. And IMG_6214.jpg had an exposure problem. The dress and background were so bright, her face was almost lost to underexposure. But all-in-all, I liked them...
On a side note, I have 2 daughters, so can we keep this little event quiet? I already have college and weddings to pay for :) This I don't need...
On another aside, my wife was curious and searched the web... She believes this became popular when Mary Kate and Ashly Olsen had a Sweet 16 party a couple of years ago... So hopefully the custom will fade before my 6 year old hits "of age" :)

Actually, Sweet 16's have been around for quite a while, but not to this level of extravagance. Doesn't have anything to do with Mary Kate & Ashley, but a mixture of the Latin American tradition of the Quinciniera (celebration of becoming 15) and the Wealthy having coming out parties and debutant balls, as a way to showcase thier money and introducing their kids to society.
Unfortuantely, it's trickled down into every-day society, it seems.
