She's visiting me for the weekend so we decided to have a shoot. Let me know what you think, and how they could be better etc. Thanks!

My first use of bluring, I think it turned out pretty well!

I love to do this effect! Is the zipper under her face too bright? should that be edited out, just wondering if that's bothering anyone.

ok here's a rework of the 2nd one. Just blacked out the zipper, and didn't mess with the cyan or blue channels at all. Just desat. every but those two channels, no saturation or hue at all.

zipper is much better. Personally, I dont care for the selective desaturation here, but that could just be me. I also think it would have been better if you had her look into the camera.
Edit: I really like the colour one, btw.

Hi logan - yeh its better without the zipper, I like both shots though maybe eyes are a little bit overdone in the b&w shot, but thats down to personal tastes.

The eyes in the second photo haven't been edited at all though. I can't help if her eyes are really bright! |

Hope you don't mind. I took the color one and did a color shift. Yours looked just a little dull and the whites of her eyes seemed to be off. I used that as a reference point and changed them to a more neutral gray color. It looks like the desat one also has to much blue in the whites of her eyes.

I think it looks good bright, but that might be a bit too bright for me. Somewhere inbetween the two might work quite well. I hadn't thought that it looked dull until you posted this, thanks for the new perspective. |

I really like the first one, especially after the slight color shift. I am not a fan of the selective desat. I would love to see that one in color as well. Also, I don't think you need the model looking at the camera always. I think it adds to the interest of the first shot to have her looking away. It makes me remember about being a teenager and wondering and dreaming about all the things you plan for yourself. The second might have been a little better with her looking at the camera. Just my 2 cents. |

I meant to say it has an overall green tinge to it which masks the true colors. Plus the blue in the eyes. Could be caused by the environment the photo was taken in, such as the grass reflecting back onto her face and the color of her jacket? Look at all the medium tones on her face. But I agree mine is to bright. It erases all her freckles, which is an endearing feature red heads have. |

It could be, but it's also likely caused by the way I edit photos with the red blue and green channels in the levels part of photoshop. It would probably be better to use curves... if I had it in this version. |

Beautiful model. Keep the color. The desat looks forced, and the lack of color in the photo makes the eyes look fake, even though they're not. The color version is great. The blurring worked well. Mind sharing your process? |

I really like the color version better. I hope you don't mind, but I am on an editing binge tonight. Here are my attempts at your photo. The second has been softened in NeatImage. I know everyone has differing opinions on the soft focus, but I really like it on close portraits and gave it a try. Thanks for letting me play.
Note, I will remove them from my folder in a bit.

Sure, I just did a general lasso select and then inverted it. I then feathered it to 10 pixels and applied gausson (spl?) blurring until I got the look I was going for. |

I like the neat image one better than the first, however it looks a little overdone. I think neat image is great for an instant fix for skin. |

I've been practicing with selective soft focus on female faces. I basically just use the blur tool in photo shop element -2. I use it selectivaly to soften the lines in the face and wherever its needed. Always Always keep the eyes krisp. On this one I selected the eyes with the lasso tool and put a little unsharpen mask. I Think the secret wich I havnt perfected yet is that less is more. Dont over do it. Kevin

Sorry Saint, but you have gone too far and turned a beautiful model into an anime character. Whatever process you used (neatimage? blur? both?) it was much too strong. |
