Hi Everyone....
I just joined the Critique Club and what to get a feel of what others want to get feedback about. I'm sure I will develop my own style but just want some suggestions to get me going....and maybe get me thinking about some aspects and areas of photography that I may overlook with my limited experience.

Thx Scott

Not sure if its congratulations or commiserations for the new role :)

Anyways, what I would like to see is a critique on how a fotog has improved over time rather than an individual picture. In my short time here I think I have improved and have enjoyed watching others upload better pictures.

Glad to see another volunteer for the Critique Club! Thank you for deciding to share your insights.

Suggestions to get you started?

When I show my pictures to 'anybody' I first want to know what they see. So tell me, "I see lots of ... which..." "This grabs me because..." "Your subject is...and that...." In other words, tell me about you and my photo before you begin to tell me how to crop, expose, choose a subject, or whatever. AND, it doesn't have to be a super positive response at first--I'm happy (and of course I'm only talking about me) with someone saying "This doesn't really grab me...BECAUSE...." Just tell me why you think what you think and you can tell me anything.

Maybe you'd want to read critiques that other people have written? Here is a randomly selected one of mine from long ago - hmmm, I used to love to write these, I should get back into it.

Anyone else want to post a link to a critique they recieved and liked or wrote??

I really liked this one : )

It offers a humorous but accurate analysis of the underlying themes, and recommends specific suggestions for improved technique.

Comment by e301:
Dang - must be the evil expansionist/imperial tooth fairy, then. The worldwide conglomerate tooth fairy - not happy with the simple process evolved by the traditional tooth fairy over millennia, resorts to morally dubious means, though remaining within the letter of the written law, to drive an increase in turnover in a business beset by improving dental medication and care. Analysts at Thrust Clench and Grasp, city stockbrokers, expressed their approval.

Technically, I think your image could perhaps have benefited from a clearer depiction of location - at this closeness, it isn't really clear what these surfaces are. Control of light could have been better too - the highlights are a touch harsh, and composition is a bit blunt and lacking finesse. But it's a neat twist, all the same. 7

Very nice of you to volunteer, Scott!

Lots of folks have offered great advice. I would only add that when I receive a critique of my work, I always appreciate tactful honesty. Sometimes I try something new or really "out there" and while I might be on the right track that first attempt can really suck! I know it and my viewers know it when an image just doesn't work. So don't blow sunshine up a photographers butt but always be kind. :-)

Ah yes, being a critique member myself I second that thought of Digistoune. What is required is tactful honesty. Look well at the image and decide slowly at first the approach you want to take until you wet your feet a bit. With some images you will be able to use half the space to compliment and the other half to critizise. In doing so consider saying things like an interesting variation on this would be...

You must bear in mind that the member in question made some decision to put the shot together. My suggestion is to find a thread of sympathy for those images that missed the point altogether and remember the following: Try not to change the image so much by suggesting major surgery. These folks have composed and executed what in their mind is an acceptable composition and it is very easy to suggest. But then, that is why they seek the critique. Sometimes your most helpful statements may not be appreciated but that is the nature of different temperaments. Good luck and go do it. Welcome to the club. dan

One more thing - It is nice to send the critiqueee a private message telling them that you have posted a critique of their photo. Some people don't check back often and some might miss the critique all together.

Agree with KaDi. It's wonderful when you get a critique like this, hearing what someone else sees.......and it really does help!

Applause for the CC!! They do an amazing job, bit mindblowing when you think of the number of images posted here per challenge. Their hard work and thoughtful/helpful/honest comments are greatly appreciated.
