Well, as always, I had a hard time choosing a photo to submit. Out of three I really liked, I choose the one that had the obvious mirror with frame to be safe and I also thought it had the most interesting perspective of the three. I like all 3 for different reasons, but they also all have their little flaws. Have any you'd like to share?

I really think outtake # 1 would have done well if it had been a slightly sharper focus...it's very nice!
I like your challenge entry as well but it is definitely a little disorienting to look at (which isn't a bad thing in and of itself, but you lose some of the emotion)... |

I had posted mine early this morning in THIS thread. As for yours, I really love the one you submitted...but that one with the kiss in the mirror is adorable as well!!!!! :o) |

Thanks guys! Outtake 1 was my favorite too but, as you said, the focus was a little soft on the reflection part of the image. As for my submission, I did rotate it several ways to see which worked best but finally decided on my original view because the reflection was in the most pleasing position, in my eyes anyways. I could see how it could be disorienting though. Thanks for the feedback! :-) |

Terje, I really liked your submission alot. It had a certain nostalgic 50's horror film feel to it. It also made me really think about the mechanics of the photograph and how it was achieved. I was baffled by it. Was it two people (twins) in two mirrors. Your outtake is equally disturbing (in a good way) but again, how did you do it? Great stuff! |

I agree that this is a well done distrurbing shot. I like it better than your challenge entry due to the closer crop which really focuses in on the faces. The knife really creeps me out. Excellent image.

Unless your entire photo was taken into a second mirror, you're photo is 'upside-down' (or perhaps the camera was upside down?).
This is why it is disorienting...I think it would have scored better 90 degrees right OR a full 180 degrees.
Edit: I just saved it and rotated it a few different ways and even rotating it 90 or 180 degrees would not look 'quite right' because the photo was taken at a skewed angle (not 0, 90, or 180 degrees from the horizon). So a totally 'pleasing' look could only have been achieved at the time of shot...but I'm certainly not implying that that is what you were aiming for or what you should have aimed for...

It was the same model with 3 mirrors. Thank you for your comments :-)

I'm happy with my original I submitted, but I guess not many were. Eh, life goes on. I am curious to see if either of these outtakes would have done better though.

Hmmmm, that's very interesting. My original plan for the shot was to catch the sky in the mirror. It was quite a beautiful blue with big white puffy clouds. But I kept blowing out the sky in the mirror and when I did get it, my son was not being at all cooperative... Kids. So, to do this I positioned myself above and slightly in front of him. I think the skewed angle came from trying to keep other elements such as the balcony rail and myself out of the reflection in the mirror. Like you, I did several different rotations and crops but this is what I came out with. If anything, maybe it got a few folks a little queasy! :-) Thanks again! |
