Ok, I know this subject has been discussed in the past, but I couldn't find any helpful threads:

I'm trying out again for the school paper and need to have a basic portfolio. How many pictures should I include? Also, any recommendations of shots to use based on my portfolio?

Thanks!

(also, should they all be 8x10's or comparable size? I have to print them tonight since the audition is tomorrow)

Ain;t no expert but my faves are Lightspring, Dark Halloe Falls, Pure Bass, Reflections, Austin Scott, & guiding light.
I guess it would depend on what kind of fotog you will be doing for the newspaper.

Good Luck!

Thanks, eventually I'd like to shoot the football games, but first year photographers don't get those assignments.

I'd include 'Any Given Saturday'.

I pieced together some of the suggestions and I think I'll go with Dark Hollow Falls, Guiding Light, Austin Scott, Reflections, Lifespring & Around the Bend

Thank you all for your help! Now to find a place to print them within walking distance = P

I had an interview wiht the local newspaper last week. They wanted to see my 'human interest' photos since that is primarily what you see in a newspaper. My meeting was with the head photographer and the editor in chief. I showed them this portfolio:

//www.pbase.com/jmsetzler/hickory

It's a good thing I had this set of photos because they loved them. I just started this series around the first of the year, and without it, the newspaper may not have even considered using me for 'stringer' work.

They will be interested, to some extent, with your technical ability, but they are also interested in your ability to capture the 'life' around you.

Good luck :) I hope you get the position. Let us know how you do :)

John

I really like the work you have done on your Hickory series.
Well done as usual.

Woohoo, made the first cut (exposure test & 'essay' on why I want to work for the Collegian). I have an interview Tuesday before they make their final decisions. Thanks for your advice John, I actually don't have a lot of human interest shots but will try to take some this weekend to incorporate into my portfolio.
