Greetings...
I have encountered a need for using my AI Servo mode on the Canon EOS 10D. I have only briefly played with this focus mode in the past and I do understand how it works. My question is:
If I have the camera set up in continuous drive mode with AI Servo focus active, will my camera re-focus between each photo in the burst?

Assuming Canon has stayed with the technology of the original EOS cameras, yes. About 15 yrs ago they ran a series of ads showing that the AI Servo mode not only tracked the focus, but was able to judge how the focus would change while the mirror was up. My EOS-1n worked extrememly well in this mode shooting moving wildlife, track & field athletes and my AlfaRomeo Spider Veloce coming down a weaving canyon road at some speed. I think it may surprise you at how well it does work. |

Thanks for this answer... As I dig deeper into my manual, it does talk about the "Predictive AF" capabilities of the camera. It appears that the camera can 'assume' focus based on how fast/slow the focus was moving and in what direction. I'll do some experiments and see how it goes... :)

you can use AI servo in any shooting mode?
does it limit the ISO on the 10d?
i sometimes use it like the IS of higher end lenses...

I've played with it a bit,a nd really like the results. I did see a significant difference depending on the lens in use. For best results with this mode, I definitely recommend lenses with fast AF, e.g. ring USM. I pretty sure, but don't have enough experience to confirm, that fast glass (f/2.8 or faster) will be a benefit as well. Basically, anything that helps AF response should give better performance.
I'd really like to try this mode on a 1D Mk II or a 20D with the "high-precision" AF. |

Can you pan the camera while using AI Servo? And what about IS, if you're using a tripod you could turn IS off. Wouldn't that speed up AF a bit? |

According to Canon's Chuck Westphal, there's -with the last generation of lenses- no longer a need to turn off the IS when mounted on a tripod. The lens will sense it and disable it internally.
To determine which generation IS your lens is, consult the instruction sheet that came with your lens.
