Canon claims that the new 20D will have ISO performance at 1600 to be EQUIVALENT to the 10D's 400... pretty amazing.

That, and the 3x focus accuracy for F2.8 lenses, is really nice.

Phil's preview is here, which also mentions the new "digital-savvy" 580EX Speedlight...

Oh Lord! I'm gonna have to hit the ole ignore button on these posts lest my credit card gets wind of this new 20D!!

It definitely looks like an extremely nice feature set, especially with 8.2 MP and the high-precision AF sensor when using the center AF point. (The fact that Canon had these HP AF sensors on their pro-level 1-series film and digital bodies was one of the main reasons I bought Æ’/2.8 and faster lenses when I started buying lenses, since I figured I'd eventually upgrade or the technology would "filter down".)

I think all the pundits who were saying the D70 is "the DSLR to buy" or "the 10D is no competition" may have to re-think their point of view in light of the 20D... and reinforces my notion that you shouldn't choose Nikon vs. Canon because of this year's camera body/features but for the lens system. You're much more likely to upgrade your body, but keep your lenses (if you buy good quality glass at least). All the folks with a Digital Rebel are in a really desireable upgrade position right about now. =] (Plus, do I need to mention all the white lenses in these photos?)

Any mention about the difference between the 580EX flash and the 550EX?
08/19/2004 07:06:09 PM · #9
Oh y'all... how could you POSSIBLY want that ol' thing when the review CLEARLY STATES that...

GPS is not an option

Now dangit, if I'm plunking down $1500 for a camera , it better come standard with a built in GPS system... because that's such a handy item to have, you know...along with ironing, cooking, cleaning, gardening, and taxi service.

sheesh!!! LOL ;o)

If anybody really is serious about getting one right away, I highly suggest you call some place and get on the waiting list NOW. You can always cancel it later. I did as soon as I heard about the 1D Mark II, and got mine in the first US shipment. (I ordered mine from OneCall; they don't require any deposit or pre-payment, and are an authorized Canon USA retailer.)

Good point! I'm still waiting for my 1DII, September is the time they are quoting me now...

edit: Found the review of the 580EX, new battery pack and L-flash bracket...

Better AF, improved low light handling, better ETTL, more AF points, higher buffer size and improved general speed - pretty much everything I was getting annoyed with on my D60. For $1200 sign me up!

Guess you're not going to buy a LEAF? :-)

As far as the noise claims, we'll see. Noise level isn't the only thing to judge -- Nikon D70 has worse noise level than 10D, but the photos at 1600 looks better than 10D (the noise is more random, more like film grain -- 10D noise has patterns and more blotchy!)

Still looks like I'll get my hands on a LEAF. Never was planning on buying it :)

I'm gonig to sit out on this one -- or at least wait until it's widely available.

I am going to make sure it doesn't have the problems that 10D has (inaccurate autofocus at times, etc.) I mean, the claims are just claims....

Still for $1300 i'd rather get a 300mm F4 L IS than a new camera....

This is really tough for me. The improved AF looks sweet, and the speed improvements are very welcome as well. These are really significant upgrades, and cover the two main frustrations I have with the 10D.
I was really hoping for a 1.3x crop sensor, but at this price point that wasn't gonna happen. I also would have liked to see a larger LCD that's easier to make out in bright environments.
I think packing in 8.2 Mpix into the 1.6 crop sensor format is going to tax glass to the very limit, so other than lower noise, I don't see that there will be a great improvment in "real world" image quality unless your glass is absolutely razor sharp.
I'm gonna think long and hard about this, I was really almost decided to upgrade, but I may rethink and wait it out. There is still a major "hole" in the market between the 20D and the 1D MK II, and that begs the question as to whether it will be filled.

You got my concerns there --

i was really hoping for a EOS 3 equivalent. but i guess that's not gonna happen.

With the way the crop factor works, you just really can't resolve that 8 megapixels unless you shoot sharp primes.

new battery grip :(

No doubt means L brackets wont fit either.

Any idea if the timer remote works or does it use the dumbed down Drebel one ?

Good point! Yes, it uses the "N3" type remote, same as 10D. Yay!

What would that be ? The same camera as the 20D with the 1DMkII sensor ?

The only other thing would be the 45 point AF, but this seems to have a completely different AF system with the 9 point diamond.

I see the rear joystick is for AF selection, probably replacing the registered AF thing as well, with the press-select option that it has.

On the negative side, the shooting buffer is actually fewer frames than the D60 and 10D in RAW mode. D60 would do 8, this 20D is 6, 10D was 9 ?

20D samples on Canon Japan's web site.

Also of note is that the 23 shot buffer is only for JPEG's; shooting RAW it is limited to 6. (also from Canon Japan web site)
