Neon is the 10th element in the periodic table. It is colorless but glows in an electric discharge. Neon is also used to describe an extremely bright color. Use this challenge to creatively photograph "neon"... but please, no "Open" signs!

i think i will just take a pic of nothing and call it neon the 10th element with no electric discharge...hahaha

I would suggest that only if you want to attempt to join the Burt Reynolds League.

The comments on those photos are so funny!
"ROFL .... YOU WIN....HANDS DOWN!!!! Your hand is sooooo milky smooth I can hardly stand it!!!"
"why???"
"I don't think you realize how painful this picture is to look at. On art level, there is nothing to see, therefore creating pain. On a physical level, it is literally painful due to its brightness. I would not have recommended you to submit this."
"Is this pic a mistake or did you mean to be a tiny pic in the upper left of the big white empty space?"

and my personal favourite -

"This is so AWFUL I puked in my lap. I must be stupid. The only reason you get a 1 is because I can't give out a negative score. I showed it to my cat, she puked too. My kid ran away screaming with his eyes covered. YUCK! I don't dare show this to my wife. You really need to keep this awful stuff to yourself."

You are right.

OK, here's my understanding of this challenge...

Neon is the 10th element in the periodic table. - So, Fluorine is the 9th element and Sodium is the 11th. So we are looking for something that goes between Toothpaste and Salt.
It is colorless - so only black and white photos
but glows - think Rudolph the Red-nosed reindeer
in an electric discharge. - gotta be lightning
Neon is also used to describe an extremely bright color. - so overexpose that black and white photo
Use this challenge - use, abuse, do whatever you want to with it
to creatively - so none of them normal shots you take with water droplets, flowers, bugs, motorcycles jumping over stuff, etc...
photograph "neon"... - remember it is a colorless thing that you have to photograph in b&w showing rudolph flying through a lightning storm pulling a sleigh full of toothpaste and salt
but please, no "Open" signs! - don't worry, if you photograph what I've told you in the previous line, you don't have to worry about this one.

Hope that clears it up for you, and as always, I will vote your pic a 1 and rant about how you don't understand the challenge, if you don't meet my idea of what kind of picture you should take.

I have a super idea...my dad has a lightbulb with neon in it that shakes around due to a magnet that's also inside. This creates a very neat effect! Exited to see the other entries!

And on another note I had a house fire last night- everythings ok but the attic is a disaster...and theres a couple holes in the roof and ceiling where fire fighters fell through.

There is no Neon within a 65 mile radius of where I live. I may have to burn or explode somthing, this should be fun.

If you're in the LA area, the Museum of Neon Art does a night cruise around town to give a three hour historical tour of neon signs. Cost is $45 ($35 for members) and there is one this Saturday night the 14th which is just before the submission deadline. I'm probably going if anyone else is interested we can meet up somewhere before for dinner then head over to the museum for the start of the tour. Here is the link to the cruise page: //www.neonmona.org/cruise.html.

Sounds like you have good opportunities somewhere near you
//www.lonelyplanet.com/destinations/north_east_asia/osaka/ or I'm just further exposing my geographic ignorance.

What was your question? I've looked through the thread several times and don't see any posts from you -- except this one!

Wow! Thanks!

Then the link from flip89 above is the answer. No signs that have the word "OPEN" in them as the main subject, I'd guess.

//images.google.com/images?q=open%20neon&ie=UTF-8&hl=en&btnG=Google%20Search

You may have to type the link since it splits 2 lines.

would anyone object to a "N3bO" sign? :D

Is it just me or are the entries for "Neon" a little slow with less than 2 days until it closes?

Looks like there won't be much to vote on. I had trouble coming up with a concept. Ending up going with the bright colors aspect cause the only neon I can find says either Busch or Bud.
08/16/2004 06:54:28 AM · #44
Don't forget your science:

"Neon emits bright orange/red light when energized in this way. Other gases emit other colors."

//science.howstuffworks.com/question293.htm
//en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neon

I better not see any blue, green, yellow, etc!!!

*evil grin*

Is anybody else not taking a picture of actual Neon or a Neon sign, but something that has a Neon Effect?

Just Curious. I have an image in my mind, one that I know I can pull off really well, but I think it'll get clobbered in voting becuase it isn't actually Neon or a Neon sign :)

Oh, grin and just friggin' do it :)
