I have the x drive and have to say it d/l's to my computer faster than my camera using firewire. NewEgg got mine to me in 3 days regular shipping. If you get the 40g hard drive you will have problems formatting it. Have to use fat32, which was beyond my abilities. Had to have the guy that built my computer format it for me. He had to get special instructions from the manufacturer of the drive. So best to get 20 or 30 gigs if you want to plug it in and use it right away.

Don't overlook MindStor digital wallet or FlashTrax. Maybe pricier than you are looking for and I don't know about the shipping/delivery issues, but there is a phone number on the website,so you could talk to them about rush delivery.

I have talked to several peeps who love the FlashTrax (don't own it myself, but wish I did!)

I bought the Archos gmini 120...a 20 gb mp3 player with a built in card reader.
Got it in circuit city for $200.
Doesn't have a viewer though, don't know if you wanted one.
Circuit city has a very easy 30 day return policy too.

I use a Wolverine SixPac. It accepts 6 different media cards which directly download onto the 20GB drive. Upload to your home computer is via USB cable. It costs around $250.00 US. I picked mine up while I was in Texas. It was at an electronics superstore like a Best Buy or Circuit City etc. A Yahoo search of Wolverine SixPac will give you the home page for your own analysis and possible store locations near you. I liked it because it 200 dollars less than what I was considering at the local camera store and was stand alone usable (own battery source). It is dimensionally similar to a small film point and shoot, which makes for a nice fit in my camera bag. This unit and a pair of 256 cards, and you can shoot continuously for up to 20GB.

Give it a look. Wolverine SixPac. Mine is the 6000 series.

Do you know if you can delete individual images from the flashtrax? Can you load info onto it from the PC and use it as temporary storage? I am looking into this item myself.

Well, if it's not too late and you are handy enough to put a hard

Yes you can do almost anything you want with the Flashtrax - from the unit itself - or from the pc when it's connected. To the PC - it looks just like a hard disk drive.

Hey all, here's an update.

I figured as long as I was going to be spending a large sum of money anyway, I would go ahead and buy a notebook PC. This was something I was planning to do early next year anyway, and the one that I bought (which has a CD writer) will also allow me to make backups of the images on the road. Having the laptop also solves some other potential problems for me over the next few weeks.

Thanks everyone for the advice!
