If you could spend $40 on any one thing to improve your photography what would it be?

If a $40 lens improves your photography, you may have other issues.

Most people will suggest books, but those are free at the library. I would suggest material for a nice backdrop, or maybe a polarizer.

At this time?

I would spend around $26, plus tax on a Canon Cable Release for my camera. This would greatly assist with the camera shake issue I am having.

The rest, I would spend on an informative, as opposed to a marketing oriented, photography magazine or two. Something that would explain how to capture images to obtain certain results.

I'll order that and 2004 Photographer's Market. (this wasn't a hypothetical question hehe)...one of those I know a friend who knows a friend who only has 40 bucks to spend...

Lighting or backdrops, my new garage will be finished in a couple of weeks...whoohoo... more space, then I can set some sort of studio up.

EDIT: sod the car :)

I would apply it to a book of some sort... Probably a biography/autobiography of some photographer that I like or possibly a photo collection book from one of those photographers.

I may also apply it to expenses for a day trip to somewhere I have never been before.

Spare battery.

Edited to say, thinking about it I'd spend it on beer cos I seem to shoot better after a few :)

No, don't order that. That item is just an adapter. It isn't the actual release. This is the release I am talking about...

Remote Switch RS-60E3

You can find it at stores and online for around $26.

I'd 'buy back' an extra half hour off work and go out and shoot some more.

Or I'd get $40 worth of prints of my shots and spend the time to finish them properly - I find the discipline of making a final print really makes me focus (and get annoyed!) at any failings in the shots - that I then try and avoid in the future.

Maybe I'd use the $40 to buy a tank of gas and drive somewhere interesting to shoot. Or use it to buy & pay for development of 4 rolls of B&W film.

I think probably the prints, though the extra time of work would be good too, if my boss would take my money :)

Oh you have got to be from somewhere other then the United States.

The status quo in the US is to use the garage for only a few things...

Tons of crap that you should just toss away.

"Toy" Cars like a souped Street Rod or Classic Auto.

A Small Boat.

A Woodworking or Machine Shop.

Never your car. That's like the last thing you put into a garage.

(Of course the whole "Sod the car :)" thing says that...)

I'd spend mine on a ticket to ride...

A cheap airfare from Easyjet or someone or maybe a train ticket...

...to somewhere I'd not been before.

Travel always inspires my best pics!

save it, and wait for another 40 to come around, and then ya got 80 to spend.

I really don't have too much to add here, perhaps time would be most useful to practice, and you could buy a bunch of coffee with forty dollars. (about 3 1/2 venti's at starbucks- lol)

I find that when it comes to contrived inspiration, you cannot beat red wine or large amounts of caffiene.

but seriously this is a great question. I would try to find a pill for forty dollars to keep me from compulsively entering my ill-fitting entries to challenges.

Buy some cheap wine and get a bunch of chicks really drunk, so I could do some nude studies.

Between these classy posts and, "Honey, look what I found under a log today," that's a rare wife indeed.

I have a kodak, and yeah the close up lens (@$30) may improve some of my pictures. And yeah, I do have other issues!
