I appreciate the comments and suggestions made during the challenge. I am not completely disappointed with my 51st place finish, and I even got a favorite pick out of the deal (thanks BradP!)...however, I would like more suggestions on how to improve. I am guessing that the shot was just too boring (no WOW factor). I'm kind of stuck in a boring rut at the moment as it stands. Anyway, if you have time or feel like letting me know what I could have done differently, I would appreciate it. Thanks again! ;o)

This picture kind of reminded me of the begining of Gilligan's Island. I think it is a good picture but not very album covery. I am still trying to figure out how to create the WOW factor myself. (I thought I had captured the WOW factor for Everyday Objects but it is barely holding onto a 4 lol!) If I figure it out how, I will let you know :)

Laurie,
There is just one MAJOR problem with your submission - TONS and TONS of stunning entries! The creative juices really flowed on this challenge - and some of us didn't stand a chance. Heck - I would have killed for top 50 (he says, licking his 68th-place wounds.)
The image is technically very well done, the text placement very nice - and it's a pretty good scene. But "pretty good scene" is the key I think. There may be too much, too many boats. If you could have jumped in - gotten much closer and found a pleasing scene with 2 or 3 boats - it would help a bit. It would also help is one or more on the sails were hoisted. Finally - late afternoon lighting would create a nice feel.
Sorry - not much help I know, but it's hard to give suggestions when an image is already the best it could be done under the circumstances.

I'm going to agree with Bassie that it just isn't very album covery. It's a great photo, but it looks too much like a stock photo to be used for an album cover (imo).
Still, you did a good job. |

I thought this was well done and gave this an 8 based on it's good overall aesthetics.
However, looking at it for areas of improvement, perhaps the most significant thing about this is that it's a good background, but there's not a strong focal point/subject. The backdrop is fine for a sailing theme, but compare the impact that might have been had using your title with a strong view of a saiboat with full sails racing in the wind; a windsurfer catching air, etc. (that is a strong central subject).

| I thought it was kind of dull for this challenge and didn't have the feel of cover art. It was a good band name though. Sort of like an Irish folk band. |

Nice idea and subject, but the light is mid-afternoon and quite flat. The same subject in different light would have worked better, I think... After all, it's not about the subject, its about the light.

Hi Laurie,
I really like that shot. It has all the elements needed for a good composition & album cover. Good gradients in the sky, good detail in the sailboats, good text & placement. Band name was really on the mark with the shot too.
I think it would have scored MUCH higher, had it not been for some REALLY steep competition.
Be proud - it's a great shot!
