who uses them?
edit
I do, I was just curious because every time I see a pic of a pro
camera bag none of there lenses seem to have caps. Could be just the
pics that I am looking at!

anyone who is inclined to protect the most valuable and sensitive part of their camera. |

lens caps are for suckers. I like my optics all scratched up, it adds texture to the image. I often open my camera bag and throw in my keys, then shake it up so that my lens gets nice and purty.
lol. use your lens cap.

...the pictures you've seen are thoughtfully and specifically designed to promote lens envy... ;o)

i carry around some beach-sand in a zip-lock bag, when i find my images are starting to get too flat, i drop it in there and shake it up. like you said, it adds a nice texture to the images. heheh

This is probably because they keep UV filters on the ends of their lenses to protect them and speed up bag-to-shot time.

I have some slim Heliopan filters, which won't accommodate a lens cap.

I find my pictures come out much better without the lens cap on.

Here's the real reason Pro photographers don't use lens caps:
They didn't have to buy the glass themselves. I was bought by their agency or publication syndicate.
No skin off their nose if they stuff some lenses. |

I would put two on if I could. A filter is good protection but not as the first line of defense. If your lens cap doesn't fit on the filter take the filter off when storing or get one that can fit a cap.

I think people would be better off with lens hoods and using them when shooting :)

I have a question - on all of my cameras, and even my D70, I always retro fit my lens cap with a string so I can tie it to the camera and avoid losing it. Does that make me a dork? |

Think maybe that was meant in the begining but all the same this has been a very funny conversation.
My (litle) experience tells my that there is better to take of the cap before shooting and I´m glad to see that some of you have had the same experience.
About lens hoods then I use them and they can stay on the lens when shooting (or at least that is my experience, how about yours?). |

I use a lens hood on longer lenses on moderate to sunny days. when it's overcast or indoors, I'll sometimes lose the hood to let more light in. |
