buy a particular new camera for my wife. She now has a Nikon Coolpix 885 and loves it for the size, convenience and ease of operation. But, she is terribly frustrated by the shutter latency - which seems to be "forever."
So - why should I buy (fill in the blank)? It must be small, lightweight (easily fit in her purse), easy to learn and use, minimal delay when pressing the shutter, and take decent pictures. She does not need additional lenses and deosn't plan to become a DPC member.

I don't think such a beast exists yet. None of the small, lightweight cameras have good shutter lag.

Ditto. Any small non-DSLR camera will have some noticeable shutter lag. That said, you might look at the Canon PowerShot A80, a very good, inexpensive small camera with minimal shutter lag. You can just leave it on Auto and shoot away, yet there are also plenty of manual controls to grow into. |

I was going to recommend the A80 or the Canon S50 (or the S60, that's out now, but doesn't have much improvement).

My suggestion is for your wife to go into a shop and try as many as possible. There's nothing like a good test drive.

well the WHY is certainly easy to understand. you need to rack up some SPU's (Spousal Privilege Units) or "Points". When ever you do something nice for her you earn points, the more un-expected the gift and or the favor the more points you get. But you can lose point MUCH faster than earning them.
Example, giver a nice card and a some flowers at a random point in time when she least expects it = +20 points. Make a negative comment on her hair = -40 points.
as for what to buy her thats a different story, just take her shopping and have her hold and play with several cameras and get her feed back, the do some research on each one she likes, then make the decision and suprise her with it.

...because if you buy it, she will be happy...and if she's a happy wife, you'll be a happy husband... ;o)
