Based on some of the postings in this thread I thought I'd start a humorous thread about actors/actresses who have been most miscast in a major role, whether for being of the wrong ethnicity or for any other aspect of their look, personality, talent or style -- where somehow it was just ... wrong.
Some of the earlier sugestions were Marlon Brando as an Okinawan in Teahouse of the August Moon and as a Mexican in Viva Zapata, Kevin Costner as Robin Hood, and The Rock as Buford Pusser in the remake of Walking Tall.
I think I'd also like to add Pat Boone as a member of the exploration party in Journey to the Center of the Earth.
Your contributions are welcome ... maybe someone should start another thread for "most perfectly cast" as well.

Didn't Sandy Duncan, or someone like that, play Peter Pan? I never did figure that one out. This should be fun, I'll try to think of some more.

Any New Zealander cast as an Aussie in film or on TV. We know the difference! :P

I believe she did, although the role was originated (on Broadway or TV) I by Mary Martin. I think I saw the TV special. It's a very old play, though. |

Just a few to start off with...
Glenn Close as the "other woman" in Fatal Attraction...she gives me the willies, and I couldn't imagine that many men wanting to have an affair with her...
Timothy Dalton as 007...just didn't work for me (Pierce Brosnan has it going on!)...
Billy Ray Cyrus in Doc (the TV show)...what were they thinking?
edit: also add this terrific trio for the movie Black Dog...Patrick Swayze, Meatloaf, and Randy Travis...where, oh where, did that casting agent come from??????

David Carradine in Kung Fu.
Keanu Reeves in Dracula (plus any American who plays a Brit with a very bad accent)
Arnie Schwargnegger (cant spell his name) as Mr Freeze.
George Clooney as Batman.
Sean Connery in Hunt for Red October (or when he plays any nationality other than Scottish with a Scottish accent).
Harrison Ford in K19 (another fake Russian accent).
Halle Berry as Catwoman.

I didnt say he was American, but I added Americans to the list *halo* Ok I admit I didnt know. I'll include any nationality that tries to do a Brit (or any other accent) and fails really really badly.

Halle Berry can be in any movie and not even have a speaking role and she would sell a movie! If I were not engaged, she was my next choice, but too bad for her, I found the keyholder to my heart!

You could not be any more right! Great calls. I would never have thought about these because of how horrible they are ,except Fatal Attraction, but Glen Close is a closed chapter in a book that never needs to be reopened, ever! She is the epitome of abominable!

1.Antonio Banderas: Armand in Interview with the Vampire.
2.Stewart Townseed: Lestat in Queen of the Damned (that movie should never have been made, it was total and utter poop.)
Leonardo DiCaprio: King Louis XIV in The Man in the Iron Mask.

You are so right - how they thought he'd fit into the role of a teenaged european vampire I don't know. I actually liked him in the film, but it was pretty stupid if you'd read the book.

I actually saw the movie before i read the book, and even them I didnt like him for the role. As a matter of fact, i dont see what people see in him at all. In my opinion, he's a terrible actor and not good looking either. But to each its own.

I actually liked his portrayal of a vampyre, just not Armand, but then I was a diehard Rice fan. I also completely agree with almost anyone in Queen of the Damned - ugh, it was just one overlong music video.

Any movie that has me laughing and pointing and yelling at the TV has a problem in my opinion. It wasn't supposed to be funny or make me angry :P
It was filmed in Melbourne where I live and I knew a few of the extras in the crowed scenes, so I spent most of the movie trying to see them, that was the most interesting part about the movie in my opinion :)

not that he's my type or anything. I'd much rather have his co-star in that movie. |

I'm drawing on my mom's movie knowledge now ...
Katherine Hepburn in The Dragon Seed ... apparently an opinion shared by many:
Description
A heroic young Chinese woman leads her fellow villagers in an uprising against Japanese invaders. The use of caucasian actors and actresses in oriental roles significantly detracts from the film's realism. Based on Pearl S. Buck's novel of 1942. Academy Award Nominations: 2, Best Supporting Actress--Aline MacMahon, Best (Black-and-White) Cinematography.

1. Sophia Copella as Mary Corleone in The Godfather Part III. What a stench! Her abysmal performance destroyed what might otherwise have been a good movie. The role was originally to have been played by Winona Ryder, which probably would have worked. When Winona stepped out, nepotism stepped in, and the rest is infamy.
Sophia finally redeemed herself with Lost in Translation though.
2. M. Night Shyamalan, in each of the bit roles he has cast himself in, in The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, and Signs. This guy is such a uniquely talented writer and director. I wish someone would sit him down and spell it out for him. "Night, you're a hopelessly bad actor. Casting yourself in your movies is diminishing them. Unless you want your filmography to become some kind of unique testament to the perils of ego in Hollywood, you had better cut it out." I guess that isn't the kind of advice people who make money for producers tend to get.

Maria Pitillo in Godzilla.
She was Matthew Broderick's girlfriend-reporter, delivering a performance that made the monster look like Lawrence Olivier. Yikes. |
