I'm still looking for that ND filter, but does anyone have any advice or opinions on fixing this photo?

Thanks in advance.

Have you tried that little "control-alt-tilde" trick to adjust the highlights? The water in the middle is a tad bright. Then you could invert that selection and bring out some of the detail in the rocks that are in the shadows. Beautiful waterfall...where'd you take it?

The bush on the left is really distracting cuz it seems blurry. Otherwise it's beautiful...might find a way to make the waterfall not so bright though.

This waterfall is located in downtown Hilo. Thanks for the tip, I'll try that out.

Looks like a great setting, but the contrast is WAY too high. That's a tough one to fix after the fact. With a really contrasty situation like this, your best bet might be to take multiple shots (or shoot in RAW), and merge the photos later for more dynamic range. Take one shot where you get a good exposure on the highlights and another with good exposure on the shadows. You'll need a tripod to get the positions the same. Of course, combining multiple exposures isn't legal for a challenge, but you CAN merge multiple exports from a single RAW image.

Obviously, shooting at a different time of day could help, too.

A pair of sunglasses over the lens and always expose for the brightest part of the white foam in the falls. As for after the fact I think the highlight and shadow adjustment would be a good thing to try. Shots in these kinds of settings are very difficult. I'm usually happy with about 2% of the photos I take in such settings. It makes taking the rare gem all the more exciting.

I tried some minor improvements using the ctrl-alt-~ key combo and came up with this:

(old left/new right)

I think it looks a little better, but does it look a bit too dark?

I think it looks better...you have more detail in the darker rocks up front as well as less brightness on the water. :o)
