I was out on the lake this thurs celebrating my brothers 23rd bday. I took out my s5000 to take some pics of him and his girlfriend to send to the ole mom. Got some damn great shots. Apparently somone snuck on our boat and stole all of our cell phone and all my camera equipment and camera. All in all they took about 800$ of mechandise from me. Weve been out there countless times had no probs. Its a rather upscale dock off a nieghborhood with 8 million dollar homes. It was a 40 foot boat so no one evern heared them, even the ones sleeping on deck up front.
Being a poor colloege student with out renters insurance theres no way i can cover my loss. So im out of the game , guess ill have to save up for something better, maybe a digital rebel.

Im just so upset, I used that camera everday. I have enjyed the passed few months on this site, and will continue to do so. I jsut wont be participating in challenges :(...just wanted to rant...upset

So sorry to hear that Ryan,

The "stuff" you can replace. What really sucks is
the pictures that can't be replaced.

What comes around, goes around, and those that stole
your equipment will get to enjoy their miserable
existance on this planet and never understand why
they have a dark cloud hanging over their heads. Who
knows, maybe they will get struck by lightning.

We will be awaiting your new Rebel shots.

That's just terrible. People can be so mean. What goes around comes around...you can bet on that. Karma...it will take care of the thieves for you. ;o)

I really know your feeling. Back in November of last year someone broke into our house at night and took all my camera gear and my car. This was all while we were sleeping too. Very scarry. I think what may have happened if my daughter got up for some reason while they were in the house. They found my car about three weeks later and told me it was involved in a murder then changed it to just a shooting. I have lived in this house for over 20 years and have never had a problem. I wonder what is wrong with this world sometimes.

I hate that happened, but I'm not really into chasing thieves. Oh wait, that karma. sorry.

For real, though, that is horrible. I hope it all works out in the end for you. Do you know anyone you could borrow a camera from or anything.

Maybe a fund should be set up at DPC -- like a camera loaner club or something, for just such things.

That's terrible and I am sorry to here it. I nearly lost my digital camera and gear due to my own stupidity a short time ago. Fortunately it was recovered. Do you have any 35mm gear or other cameras you can still use (although not for these challenges of course)?

Jeez, before we chalk this up to bad karma or misalignment of the stars, maybe some recommendations to get his camera back would be in order. I would jot down the serial number of your camera (get it from the camera box that hopefully saved or wrote down somewhere for warantee purposes) and hit the local pawn shops. Also, check eBay for any recent additions of your camera model being sold from your general area. If you find a camera that you have reason to believe is yours, get the police involved and make an attempt to get it back. Don't roll over, you have rights and the police are there to protect them.

Ryan,

A 40-ft boat must have some kind of insurance attached to it. Check with the owner. There may be some kind of coverage that would apply to items on board.

Ryan how old are you?
Are you a fulltime college student?

Our oldest son had equipment stolen when he was away at college and we claimed it under our home owners insurance.

Maybe your parents could do the same?

sorry to hear. hope, like others have said, there are insurance possibilities.

$8 million homes and no surveillance cameras????

I bet there is video somewhere of someone....worth checking into?

There's also a web site somewhere which lists serial numbers of stolen equipment. Check it out; you may be able to, at least, make it really tough for anyone to SELL the equipment! Sorry about this misfortune!

Theres no video on the docks , its a relatively new dock, and is still under construction. I person ally think some of the contruction guys saw 8 kids on a 40 foot yacht and me taking pictures and was like hey those brats, and came back alter and stole our stuff. I tried caling the two cell phones stolen and left messages for the people who took them. Im looking to see if any of my paperwork has the serial cause i didnt get it written down I dont think. Other than that I dont have insurance but my brother who was on hte boat might. Not sure if the owners will claim anyhting because there sons cell phone was all that was stolen. THe yact is 300,000$ im sure they can get him a new cell phone. Im in community college so im not sure about insurance there eitehr. Thanks for all the great ideas. Just got a new job yesterday, so the saving begins..

Yep, sometimes it even works! I had a flute stolen from my home over a year ago, and a few weeks ago it was put up for sale on a dutch eBay-like site. I informed the police and got my flute back on the serial number. So do try, it may get you your stuff back.

Ryan,

The cellular telephones can be tracked! If they are turned on, they ID themselves to the nearest local cell tower in order to initialize to the systems and gain access to the network.

The police can at least locate them within the proximity of a specific cell tower when they are active. That is of course, if they care to make the effort to do so. That is how they located OJ Simpson when he was driving on the freeway in the Ford Bronco. Remember the footage?

Perhaps the cellular company will cooperate in some manner? Why not ask them and the police too?

If the suspects were on a boat, that should also be easy to locate. Did anyone get the name of the vessel? How far could it have gone? Go check the other marinas in the area. Was it a charter? I am not aware of your specific location, but perhaps there are locks that needed to be transited, or some other navigational issue that caused the boat to be identified, tracked, logged in, or in some manner recognized. Any web cameras on the marinas in the area?

Give it some thought. It sounds like they are lots of ways to be a cleaver detective here. And, from what you have stated, it would be worth the effort.

Alternately, speak with the construction supervisior and enquire with them. Not all construction folks are dishonest, most are just hardworking folks who do care, just like you.

Cheers,
Michael

That's great news...at least they won't be stealing other peoples' stuff for a few days. I hope you get your things back...hopefully they aren't sitting on a pawn shop shelf right now. Good luck and keep us posted! :O)

Right on! Demand your stuff back. Make a fuss. If you don't, you may never see it again.

Hey Ryan

I can feel for what you're going through, my house got broken into almost 4 months ago and I got cleaned out. Fifteen years worth of photography equipment, 5 computers, my laptop, guns, jewelery, everything. They also took 8 photo albums spanning my childhood and adult life, and my parents younger years. To ad injury to insult, they took a can of spray paint from my tool closet and tagged everything that was to bulky or heavy to carry away. The police never really got any leads.

Semi-luckily I had renters insurance, but only for about half the amount I had needed. AAA (which was great to deal with!) replaced as much of my camera and computer equipment as they could within the limits of my coverage. I ended up with a net-loss of about $14,000 though. Well worth my $12/month, though I wish I would have paid the extra $3/month for double the coverage.

Very luckily I had scanned backups of my photos and of those in my albums that were kept at a friends house. I'm so glad of that.

Good luck with your loss, sorry man.

Dave
