I have a little problem that I'm hoping the site council/administrators and DPC members alike can help my out with.

I submitted an entry into the selective desaturation challenge. Well, yesterday while a "friend" was installing and formatting some things on my computer, a folder that contains the original photo was deleted. This folder contained the original jpeg along with about 60 other photos that I was planning on post-processing. There were no backups and the original shots from the CF card on the camera are already deleted. So to make a long story short, I no longer have an original file to validate the photo (validation has not been requested by DPC)

Well, I probably wouldn't fret too much about this except that my score for the challenge just keeps climbing by the day! My score seems to be leveling out now, but judging by past challenge statistics, my photo is already well within ribbon territory! Since I won a blue ribbon in the previous challenge (planes, trains, & autos) the possibility of taking another conecutive ribbon obviously excites me. But I don't want to go against the rules or step on any toes here. So that is my dilemma. I cannot validate the entry without the original file if the photo wins a ribbon.

Site council - I'm not sure what the protocol for this is. If you feel it appropriate to remove my photo from the challenge, then by all means do so. I just wanted to bring this up and resolve it BEFORE the end calculations. I apologize for creating any extra work and will be sure this does not happen in the future. And to those that took the time to vote and make comments on it, your input is still greatly appreciated.

My lesson learned - REMEMBER TO BACK UP YOUR ORIGINAL PHOTOS!!

Oh Derick..that just absolutely sucks! I feel so bad for you...I hope everything gets taken care of. Have you already taken new shots on the card that one of those recovery programs can't recover?
06/24/2004 11:00:33 PM · #3
Unless you've already taken a bunch of new photos on that flash card, there's a good chance you can recover the deleted files. Search THIS site with terms like 'flash' 'recover', and 'restore' on whatever type of computer you are using. Good luck on the recovery and quest for a two-peat.

Thanks to my really old computer and only a 2 GB hardrive I have no choice but to burn onto a cd after I come back from taking pictures.

True that cd's won't last forever but it's better then if something happens to your computer.

Like scalvert says you can recover from memory cards as long as you haven't written over it. Good luck.

I hope you can recover your originals from your CF card. Unfortunately I think you are likely out of luck if you ribbon and don't have an original. The rules may not adapt to every situation, but at least you know where you stand.

Please at least share the picture with us afterwards. Obviously, people really enjoyed it. At least you know that. Sorry for you.

Oh my gosh! To lose your photos must be heartbreaking, regardless of the challenge results. I'm so sorry that happened to you!

Thanks for the advice with the recovery software. Unfortunately, I've filled and flushed the CF card several times since the photo was taken :(

I've pretty much written this challenge off knowing that my submission will probably be removed. But I'd rather play by the rules and someone else gets a well-deserved ribbon since I wouldn't be able to validate a win anyways. I would have loved to win ribbons twice in a row (potentially speaking of course), but it's all in good fun and there's always other challenges. Believe it or not, I'm actually more upset over losing the other photos besides my DPC submission. A college friend of mine recently had a wedding where I took alot of pictures that had sentimental value, and now they are all gone as well.
Another thing I've learned is to be more organized. I have a nasty habit of uploading shots into the same folder each day and not really organizing them. That's gonna have to change.

Sorry to hear that. You may be able to recover the deleted images (at least some of them) from the hard drive itself using similar software if they weren't overwritten. Worth a shot.

Stupid question but have you already emptied the recycle bin because unless your system is set up differently anytime something is deleted on my system it usually goes to the recycle bin. And didn't it ask if you were sure you wanted to delete the folder? Did they format the entire drive? If not, the pictures are probably still there, just a matter of finding out where they went. Do a search for the *.jpg file or whatever the extension is that comes out of your camera.

Don't give up yet!

Out of curiosity, what is your score and # of votes? I am hovering at 6.3somethingish at 183 votes. Is that anywhere close to your score?
06/25/2004 12:49:11 AM · #13
Thanks for the encouragement Deannda. A neighbor of mine who works as a programmer is coming by tomorrow to see if anything can be salvaged. But in all honesty, it doesn't look good :(

Bassie, I just checked and I'm sitting at 181 votes and a 6.6
As I said before, depending on how this challenge evolves, the winning photos might be much higher. I actually think this challenge will yield higher scores than the last couple since the caliber of photos is quite high IMHO. This is all speculative and for all I know, a 6.6 may be worth 50 place ;) But looking at the yellow ribbon scores over some of the past challenges, this is enough to take a ribbon in some cases (read: choices challenge).... Hence the reason I started this thread.

But now you got me curious... What's everyone else sitting at?

Don't use your computer any more....Log off from here, turn your computer off and DO NOT TURN IT BACK ON till your friend comes by. There is still a good chance you can recover if you DON'T USE YOUR COMPUTER!!! Just having it on will force the operating system to write and rewrite data to the hard drive destroying some of the data that is still there somewhere...

Good luck!

I agree with TooCool.

Shut that thing off and leave it off. Data recovery has taken leaps & bounds in the past 5 years or so and it isn't rocket science anymore, it a program.

Guess I should count my blessings...

2GB!?! I use that in a single challenge. How do you cope? (WWYT! :P)

Edit, sorry, had to add it on the end.

Well , my worst DPC fears have been realized. I was not able to recover the original file for my submission for the selective desat challenge and my picture came in 4th place!!!

I'm so bummed right now. A 4th place finish and DQ in the same week :(
Anyways, I've sent a message to the site asking that my picture be removed from the challenge. On the bright side, everybody gets to move up a spot ;) Again, thanks to everyone who commented and voted on the picture. Your feedback, as always, has been helpful. And once again, my apologies to the DPC admins who now have a tad more work to do because of my mess up. Why couldn't this have happened with one of my 100+ place photos (bangs head on table).

Anyways, here is my photo for viewing since it will not be on the site for much longer :(

You know, as long as no one tries to DQ you out of sour grapes, I'm pretty sure you're fine. Most people don't submit original photos - is there a new policy of verifying the top four or something?

Leave it up, I don't see anything questionable about and don't see why anyone else would.

Unfortunately it's in the top 4! (Although I think it's the top 5 they review?)

As I left in my comment, it's a great shot, Derick. Better luck next time. :-(

:-( Sorry to hear that Derick....it's an awesome photo! Best of luck for the next challenge.

There's a bright side - at least you aren't losing a ribbon :-)

And you're doing all the rest of us but three a favour - I've never had a ninth place. ;-)

Should you suffer the DQ, you'll also lose all the comments I fear - so if they're important to you I recommend pasting them somewhere else to keep them - oh, and our own 'photographer's notes'.

Good point about the ribbon, Ed.

Just in case the shot gets DQd before you get chance to save the comments/etc, I've made a copy of the page, Derick.

Normally, all top 10 finishes have to submit the original for verification. And rules are rules, if you can't produce the original you'll be DQ'd, doesn't matter if anybody questions it or not. I'm sorry to see this DQ'd, this was one of the two 10's I gave out this round.
