It starts when you get your first scores of the challenge, on Tuesday night, pretty high. They dip slightly in the next hour, but not too dramatically. Then (if you're on the west coast of the USA), you go to bed, and whoooooooosh!

When you wake up in the morning, you've dipped WAY down. It's like a free fall...a tumbling, topsy turvy head over heals plummet to mediocrity once more.

You're in...as Gordon points out... THE AVERAGE ZONE again!

I went from a 5.785 last night with a couple of good comments to a 5.0000 this morning. Weeeeee!

I went to sleep Last Tuesday, happy with my choices submission and the 5.78x score it had after the first 20 something votes, then woke up to a 3.9 score :)

Yikes! Have faith, it will sliiiiiide back up again :)

I went from a nice 6.39 after 22 votes on Tue nightthen I went to bed and woke up to a 5.3 with 44 votes. (no big deal I am still happy to just meet the challenge)

People being creatures of habit, vote at similar times I am thinking.
Taking myself as an example I usually vote on Tuesday night 10:00pm mst and watch my score untill approx. 1:00 am mst

I am willing to wager there are people who do the same.
So by the same token I would say there is a small percentage of the same people who always vote at the same time (after I have gone to sleep) and these people have serious anger issues and need to seek councilling ASAP due to the pent up aggression and penchant for low scoring.(Tongue firmly in cheek here)

So please people of the early Wed am lighten up :-).

I barely pay attention to scores anymore. While some entries produce reasonably predictable scores, many do not, but appear to reflect mere whim guided, perhaps, by phases of the moon.

Good photos do not, apparently, meet the challenge, poor ones excel, great, remarkable ones are littered with mediocre comments. It's like walking down any street this time of year. :-)

Compared to this, a greater satisfaction may be had from the flicker of TVs.

On the upside, I still communicate with real photographers, men and women with a passion for the craft -and with some for art, of which some do not enter anymore, some do not comment, unless of course, something, temporarily, wakes them from the lull. As if we're waiting for something to happen.

Nothing, of course, along my lines of thinking, is ever going to happen. Peeps are peeps, pancakes are pancakes.

This, I'm sure, is a good thing. It's a hell of an incentive! ;-)

As far as voting, I think everyone interprets the numbers differently.

Some people think a 10 is that nearly unattainable perfect shot, and never vote above and 8 or 9, driving scores down. Others only give 1's and 2's to the completely off-topic, bad pictures, driving scores up.

I try to use the challenge as a key part of judging, we all take great shots sometimes, but the challanges are to help us stretch our muscles in new ways, not just to improve our pictures in general. If a fabulous shot just doesn't meet the challenge, I'm not going to give it full points. If an average shot meets the challenge in a great way, I will give it more points for that.

The newspaper challenge is a good example. There were a number of shots that weren't technically top scorers, but were exactly the kind of shot that I would expect to see in a newspaper, and I scored them higher than some more technically adept photos that didn't try very hard to meet the challenge.

I checked in toooooooooooooo early and had 2 votes and 7.5....of course I knew that would not hold and am at 6.2239 with 67 votes. BUT that is GREAT! Considering the scores on my last 3 entries, I am happy about it.

At least you're sliding the right direction! That's wonderful! :o)
I was at a 6.5 last night with somewhere around 20 votes, but now it's at a 5.4 now...but that's just fine with me!!! ;o)

Sounds like a ribbon winner. Good luck. I'm a dismal 5.272 with 62 votes. But, that's just about right for me given past performance. Hopefully it doesn't get worse!

*sighs* Same. Froma 6.07 with maybe 17 votes to a 5.0 with 59. It makes me sick. Bah, I'm gonna go play hack.//INFECTION and forget about it for now, nothing I can do, especially with only one comment (although, I know it's too early to look of many comments). -_-

For my selective desat I started out with a 5.1 with 20 votes. Then I went to bed and woke up with a 4.7.

And it's been going up ever since (except for a slight dip this morning when I checked). I'm now sitting at a 5.5. That hasn't happened to me in any challenge.

For Newspaper, I went to bed last night with 20 votes and a 4.1 and am now at a 3.9. Anyway, that's different than normal too.

I've usually noticed that all my entries keep going down, and go down hard. Always. With the exception of the selective desat, my entires continue to go down throughout the entire challenge. I'm expecting a 3.5 by the time Newspapr is over, which is sad. It's perfectly on challenge, has clear focus, and nice colors. It' might be a bit busy, but definitely not worthy of being in the 3 range.

I'd love to see this graphed over time - perhaps hourly updates with each hourly recalc?

Other things I'd like to see:
* Bar chart of all my contest scores next to each other, with comparison of winner numbers
* Average % of all my competitions
* My total rank against all site members (registered and not)

Any other site suggestions?

I usally give about 5 for pictures that are on topic, but drag them down by one or two some times three if i dont like the picture or its just realy bad - i.e. out of focus.
Then I add poits to it as a view it, if the colors are good, sharpness, focus, croping, creative and so on.
I never give 10 for the first round but when I view the 7-9 again I give the picture(s) I like the most 10. So I almost always have one or two tens. Usually most pictures are 4-6 a dosen or two of 7-8 and three to four 9s after my first look.
I only give 1-3 to realy bad pictures and the once that are off topic.

Sounds just like how I score, except I will give 10s if they're really awesome. Only 1 or 2 usually get it though from me.

I do agree with siggi and how he is rating photos.

If a photo doesn't convey the challenge theme, then I'll give it a 1, and it doesn't matter if it's a beautiful postcard image. Often I see photos that I can't see how they convey the challenge theme, absolutely not, but after reading the title I can see a tiny connection, then I maybe score it with 2-4. I don't like to see photos that are clearly not focused on the theme subject. First I look at the photo itself and then the title, but in the "Newspaper" challenge I look at both together, in that challenge the title is just as important as the photo and the connection between the title and the photo.

You should all have better scores by now . . . . I went through and upped almost all my scores (and I vote on every picture). Frankly, there are few of the newspaper ones that are "pleasing" pictures to me, but they are absolutely appropriate to the challenge and done well. This challenge jsut isn't about "pretty" pictures, or sometimes, interesting. So I am scoring a bit different on this one. On the de-sats, I did the same thing. I love de-sats, but some were just not "wow's" for me. But I feel that everyone worked so hard to just learn the process (well, some of course already knew), that the great results deserved a bit of extra consideration. Anyway, hope some of you wre helped by .000001% LOL

Eh, siggi says he starts at a 5. Giving a 1 is unfair. Now, dropping the score by 1 isn't (say it's a 6 photo but it doesn't fit the challenge then it becomes a 5), but voting based SOLEY on meeting the challenge or not.

*hugs* You're awesome! I agree, I'm voting a bit different too, and that's why I'm trying to commment as much as possible as well to let them know why. I've seena couple WOWs that fit the theme and I gladly gave them 10s.

Anyway, g2g.

I hope I have not totally miss quoted here but are we saying we can post any picture we want to and only lose 1 point for not meeting the challenge? am sure that would help my average :)
06/24/2004 08:00:19 PM · #19
Well it depends on the challenge, but if it's a really good photo and it doesn't fit the challenge I try not to penalize it...Lol, but that's me. ^_^

I've moved up. Went from 4.6(? don't remember) to 5.04 now. I was excited to break 5.0, and was worried it'd go back down. But it just keeps going up.

Usually I vote once through and vote based on first appearances. Then after hitting 100% of voting, I go back through and get more critical and study the photos more. I think I wind up lowering more than raising scores. (usually not more than 1 point though)

Perhaps others do the same, just on a bigger scale?

You probably saw what I already said below. I guess I am really trying to up as many as possible lately. If the average is 5, then theoretically I should be givng an average vote of 5. I don't think that is a perfect statement, because the quality of some challenges is just lower, but it seems like we have all gotten harder in our scoring over time of the truly "average" photos (ones that aren't those "wow's" we all recognize). And I think in the past I have weighted "met the challenge" enough. (Some do too much, from what is said here.)

I did some changes to my votes a while ago and and I raised most of them - some of them by 2 points. I have gone through the images a few times now.

I think you missed mine. And while you're at it -- can you make that 3 higher on mine?? LOL
