Well...what percent of the time do you go out and shoot specifically for challenges as opposed to shooting normally and then picking images that meet the challenge (or so you think)?

Thanks,

Lee

i shoot photos on a regular basis, and only enter if i have an idea for a given challenge - i would say less than 10% of my photographic time is spent for challenge entries.

I've only done two challenges so far but I shot specifically for the topic both times.

However, I'm having some trouble thinking of an "extraordinary" subject. I guess I'll just hope to get lucky this week. If I don't have something appropriate, I probably won't enter. I'd rather submit something good that try to squeeze an off-topic image under the theme.

About 1% for challenges

I'm shooting specifically for each challenge.

I'm 50/50...half the time I am shooting for a challenge, the other half the time I'm shooting just for practice or fun. I usually formulate a plan of sorts for each challenge and specifically go shoot for it. But I take pictures every day whether I need something for a challenge or not...that's the only way I can think of to improve. :o)

Funny you should ask, I was just looking at my 5 submissions (1 current). Every submission was shot for a specific challenge and all have scored less than I hoped for (2 because of a dodgy monitor and poor ps'ing). Strangely, if I just take a picture of a subject I like and upload it for critism I get much better vibes and feedback than I do on my submissions (they are generaly better pics).

Maybe this is what you are looking for? I'm average at taking pictures but am challenged when 'challenged!'

Up until the portriat challenge very little time was spent on shooting for specific challenges, If a shot happened to fit a running challenge I would enter it. I would say less than 10% maybe 5%.

I have never done portriats with studio type lighting before (and it sounded interesting) so I am finding myself doing a little homework on the net and spending a lot more time and shots trying to get that right.

Sometimes I run across my challenge entry while I'm out shooting, but some challenge shots I set up and use that time to just shoot for the challenge. I'd say less than 10% is specifically for the current challenge.

In truth, about 0% specifically for a challenge. My last two entries were pictures that happened to dovetail with a challenge theme for the week, so I entered them.

I will normally shoot specifically for a challenge, but try to make it a shot that survives the challenge relevance alone. I've failed a few times recently so I'm dropping out of challenges more often from now on until I get inspired.

my few enteries were specifically shot for challenges, but they seemed forced and were not of the quality that I personally find acceptable for my normal standard. It was more of a test the waters kinda thing. So now I'm just shooting as normal and waiting for my normal shooting to cross the path of a challenge.

i would say that 95% of non-family, non-work and non-cat pictures taken in any given week are taken specifically taken with a particular challenge in mind. what with long working days, weekend commitments, it being the formula one season and so on, time is quite a rare commodity. this is why i need DPC - it inspires me, neigh, MAKES me go out and shoot stuff. i always have my camera with me though, just in case i see something fab (hence the other 5% - the blessing of a compact - no one should JUST have a dSLR, well i only have the compact, but will keep it the day a grow into dSLR world)
