I was in a hurry Saturday morning around 7 and I had an arm load of things including my camera bag with camera and all accessories. I go to get into my car and I placed the camera bag on top of my car (first dumb thing) while I put the other stuff inside and then drove away (second dumb thing). It wasn't until a long time later after I had reached my destination that I realized I didn't have my camera with me. What a depressing feeling that was. I live in an apartment and I was certain that that was the end of my camera and gear. I fealt I had no hope of getting it back but I called the appartment office, nothing, and then I called my brother who went over to my apartment and looked around and talked to people. He called a while later and told me that my neighbor had found the camera bag and he got it back for me. Nothing was wrong with the camera and it still works perfectly. I thought I would be going back to my 35mm gear for a while but instead I was back out shooting digitally all day again. Anyone else could have found the camera bag and it was amazing that it was one of the few people I know around here. This was one big learning experience. Anyone else ever do anything similar?

Man, you are one REALLY lucky guy!

If I were you, I'd go out and buy a lottery ticket. It's your week!

OMG, Tim...you are so fortunate to have gotten it back at all, let alone in one piece!!! We all do silly things when we are in a hurry...it's human nature. My "wedding photographer" (college photog major) drove off from my wedding with his camera and all 10 rolls of film from our wedding and reception on the top of his car and it was never seen again...so it happens. I'm so glad your story had a happy ending!!! Rest and breathe...tomorrow is a brand new day! :o)

Glad you got it back. Could have been a really bad ending.
I set my camera on the table this morning. Put it inside my purse to protect it.?! It shifted or something and it fell onto the floor after about 5 minutes. Odd, nobody was around it. Broke my flash unit.

One of the dumbest thing I've done, is check my watch while holding a cup of coffee.

So glad you got your camera back! My sister almost did the same thing yesterday - she and her husband were leaving our house after visiting and put their stuff on the roof of the car while packing things in and they almost left the camera on the roof. We shouted at them that it was still on the roof.

This same sister left her purse on the roof of the car when coming out of the grocery store and drove off - it fell on the ground, someone took it and cleaned out her checking account. You were really lucky you got your camera back!

I have done the same sort of thing... twice!
1. when cell phones were new and expencive I left a $1500 one on the roof of my van... never to be seen again
2. left my freight scanner on the back bumper of my van and drove out of the depot, it fell off about 1.5km down the road where a fellow driver found it. It had been run over by a truck and the bosses were none to pleased $3600 :(

I've never had anything like that happen to me, although I have one friend who had put a rented VHS movie on top of his car while packing other things inside. He forgot it there and drove off to the beach. When he got there, he started removing his windsurfer from the roof rack and noticed that he had left the movie on top of the car. It was still there! It had somehow wedged itself between the rack and the car roof and had hung on for a 20 mile ride. Cool.

On another note, my mom had gone to a Subway recently and forgot her purse there. She only noticed it missing after on arriving home about one hour later. She called right away and asked the people there to check if her purse was still there. They had found it but told her that someone had lifted her wallet. Either the staff stole it or some bastid client did. She spent the rest of the night filling out a police report and calling the banks and credit card companies to cancel and order new cards. I tell ya... some people.

Whew - What a close call! I would die if something happened to my camera so I can just imagine how you were feeling. I'm so glad you got everything back! You should do something nice for your neighbor - God knows there aren't many honest people in the world.

My mom left her purse on the top of her car one time. Got home and missed it. The phone rang, and it was her brother. Apparently, he was driving down the road and saw a purse. He stopped to get it, and it was hers! Happy Ending.

Just a couple of weeks ago, we were leaving church and my husband put his Bible on top of the car to put our toddler in his car seat. About a mile and a half down the road, we see papers flying all over the place. Bernard pulled over and found out that the Bible had wedged itself under the luggage rack, spine first, so just the cover opened. The flying paper was pieces of music and notes and stuff Bernard had used at church. Except for the litter, another happy ending.

I have left countless drinks on top of my car.

One solution that I have found. I drive a Jeep Cherokee, and I am too short to sit things comfortably on the top!!

Hoo, you must have been worried there for a while Tim. My camera (the dear 602Z) was stolen at a show in Milan last year, and I was distraught, even though our truck driver had a 602Z he was happy to lend me. Took me about three days to accept that it had actually gone. I'm going back to the same gig this year, and there's no way the Nikon's being left anywhere at all :-)

Glad you beer'd up your neighbour, too.

I think you subconsciously did it on purpose Tim, as an excuse to get one of those new-fangled 828 thingies ;)

Ditto except my car is round on top (VW Beetle) so anything I try to set on top slides right off anyway. Always thought it was kindof irritating but now I think maybe that's a good thing! :-0

And this is why you need to make sure that you have a nice personal articles policy that covers your expensive camera gear. :)

It's great that someone brought it back for you!

Years ago my father found a 35mm camera by the side of the highway while changing a flat tire. He was more than 100 miles from home. He developed the film, recognized people on the prints and returned the camera, still in working order, about a week after it was lost.

The owners were so happy to have it back. I imagine you feel similarly grateful.

Some people have done similar things with their work laptops "accidentally" to get them upgraded out of the stone age, but I don't want to go there.

Once I chased a couple down the road, flashing my lights and honking my horn after I saw them drive by with her purse on the roof. It fell off about 2 miles before they stopped. The guy got out of the car looking very angry, until I told him what had happened. His demeanor changed instantly and they seemed quite grateful.

You were very very very lucky. Glad to hear it all worked out.

When I lived in San Diego, my wife (then girl friend) and I took a trip up to Laguna Beach. On the way we stopped at a rest area in Oceanside. We bought some snacks from the Roach Coach in the parking lot and went on our way. Hours later I realized that I had left my wallet. On the way back home we stopped back at the rest area and asked around but no luck. I was so mad at my self, money, license, credit cards, day timer... all gone. What a stupid move! Totally ruined our trip.

The next day I received a package in the mail. Inside was my wallet. And nothing was missing! Hell they hadn't even used a dollar to pay for the postage to mail my stuff back to me. :) They had gotten my address off of my license and mailed my wallet back with a note that said simply "found on the streets of Oceanside". That was it. No name or anything.

I can hardly explain how broke I was at that time in my life. Getting my wallet back was like a death row pardon. There are still some good people in the world.

If the person who mailed my wallet back to me 14 years ago is out there, thank you very much.
