Gulp. I go to have an operation on my fractured eye socket tomorrow - so please all vote very nicely on my Planes, Trains ... shot :-)

Er, perhaps that should be !-)

Apologoes for blatant sympathy demand - I'm a touch nervous, never been under the knife before. Any good horror stories to cheer me up?

Fractured eye socket? For the love of Pete, I've never heard of something like that before. Apparently I've been out of the loop and missed your news. I can't imagine having more sympathy for you - that sounds positively horrible.

Best of luck. I've been under the knife numerous times (I'm very clumsy) and it's a little weird getting your head together when you're waking up, but if you like and trust your doctors, don't worry about a thing. I'll be sending you good thoughts all day. Heal quickly!

Hey, best of luck with the op. Is it a general anesthetic? if so my best advice is to be honest to the aneathatist (sp). IMHO its not the surgeon you should be worried about but the stuff they use to keep you under.

I recently had an op on my back and when I came around I was holding something, the surgeon had given me - a bottle with the remains of one of my disks! It now sits above my tv.

As for the sympathy vote, we don't know what your submission was lol

I've had multiple eye area surgeries. It's not the most fun in the world. Your head is gonna feel pretty funny. That said, you will be up and about pretty fast. Take it easy, and try not to do things that strain your eyes too much the first couple of days. (computer, tv, reading). I'd get a couple of books on tape from the library. :)

Good luck, and feel better!

In your honor, I'll vote nicely on ALL of 'em! And remember to be (your quote) "passably pleasant" to all of the surgical staff.

Seriously, the best of luck to you in the morning. These folks know what they are doing. Honest.

Horror stories? Well, when I was 14 I was in a bike accident that shattered the bone under my left eye, caved my skull in about 5 inches and ripped my neck apart like it went through a meat grinder. The eye part was interesting because in order for my eye to heal they had to insert a peice of plastic under my eye that I was told later my body might reject as I got older and it might push it out further when in reality my body accepted it so well, you can't even feel the bump under my left eye anymore. I can't see out of my left eye, haven't since that day which was also interesting because I had signed up for driver's education in high school before it had happened. Thinking I would have to drop the course because my DOF was affected (try walking around with one eye covered for about 1/2 hour, it's interesting to say the least) and went to talk to the teacher the first day of class. I explained what happened, he mentioned that he had heard about the story. He asked which eye I was blinded in. I said, "My left eye." while pointing to it.

He said, "Which eye?"

"My left eye."

"This eye?" pointing to my right eye.

"No, this eye," said I pointing to my left eye.

"Oh! This eye?" he asked again, pointing to my left.

"Yes! My left eye!" said I slightly fustrated.

"Okay, then just do me one favor," he said.

"What?"

"Don't close this eye while you're driving, okay?" he said pointing to my right eye. :)

But to answer your question, "YES! You do only need one eye to shoot photos, I'm living proof."

Good luck!

Well, make sure to see an eye specialist and not a vet for the operation.

On a serious note, my thoughts and wishes go out to you, Ed. May all go well, and may you be better for it after it's done.

I'm another cyclops - no big deal (a kid was throwing nails in third grade). But you'll be able to shoot fine while your eyes heal. They amke binocular microscopes but I have never seen a binocular camera.

Thanks for all the thoughts, comments and PMs guys. I'm now home, with added rather large piece of Titanium screwed into my eye socket. Bizarre, really, and futunately pain-free.
