Doens't day much for apple quality, now does it? LOL
My generic pc monitor is pushing 5 year, myu old monitor, gosh, gotta be 8 years old, still works fine. Never had a printer break..my laser is 11 years old and used almost daily!

I agree regarding the karma thing - call them and see what to do. However, if this is the return of good karma to you, then keep it.
Hmm...decision time!

But then if you did not get what you originally ordered, call them and say how you LOVE what you got and you'd like another. They make another sale! Everyone wins!

And yes, free unsolicited USMail items are yours to keep...but does that cover FedEx, UPS, etc?

Actually, yes... it speaks volumes. The Apple PowerMac is the only thing still running (thanks for pointing that out). The other items were from 3rd party manufacturers who primarily sell to the Wintel crowd.

What if, hypothetically, this is karma coming back around?

Do you want to take that chance? ;)

edit to add: If it IS the return of Karma, they'll tell you to keep it.

If it's karma coming back around, then when you call and tell them what happened, they will tell you to keep the stuff. Then you're extending your own good karma AND getting some paid back to you in one fell swoop.

When I first read your post, I thought... "sweet, I would keep the cool equipment, and never think again about how you got it." By the time I got to the end of the thread, I remembered something.

My first job as a news videographer was at the local FOX affiliate. I had worked there as an editor for 2 years, and desperately wanted to hold the cameras. I finally talked the chief photographer into letting me go shoot a couple of stories a week.

Well, I went on this shoot where the people we wanted to talk to were hostile. The reporter I was with was carrying a microphone which I was responsible for, he laid it down, and when we were chased off the property he left it behind.

When I got back to the station, I realized it was gone, and I almost had a heart attack. I would never get promoted by being so irresponsibe with the station's equipment. Somebody called and said they found a FOX mic on the ground. He then returned it. My butt was saved.

The funny thing is, I later was in the drive thru at taco bell in my news truck after being hired, and this guy says... "how much are one of those microphones that you guys use worth? I told him about $300. He said, "damn, I should have hocked the one I found on the ground"

I quickly thanked him for his good deed and explained to him that he saved my job, and helped me out a great deal.

Just something to chew on. That guy could have made some money, but his good deed saved my butt. Even though he didn't know all the consequenses of his action, he did the right thing.

but I think I would keep the shiny new equipment. I'm not that strong. lol

An ethical dilemma is having to choose between two RIGHT courses of action, not choosing between right and wrong. In this hypothetical situation, the right course of action is clear (it's the one you don't have to lose sleep over, wondering if you did the right thing), and the choice is between doing what's right and rationalizing or justifying or otherwise ignoring the little red conscious flags that go up and doing something else. There's no ethical dilemma here, unless you want to define the issue as whether your friend wants to be ethical or not.

A few months back I went into the D'Angelos (local sandwich franchise) near my daughter's ballet class and ordered a sandwich. I was really hungry and had a 2 1/2 hour wait ahead of me. The sandwich was made and I went to pay and discovered my debit card was not in my wallet. I had given it to my daughter earlier in the day to run and errand and forgotten to get it back from her. I had no cash but I offered to pay by check. Instead, the manager let me go with a promise to pay it another time. She knew I came in often because of my daughter's class. Well, the following week I paid her in cash. She had already forgotten about it but she was really appreciative.

Fast forward to a couple of weeks ago. The scenario is pretty much the same, only this time, my card is declined (for typical reasons involoving being poor that I won't go into ;D). She remembered I had been good for the money last time and let me go on my word I would pay next time. I nearly forgot about it but ths thread reminded me. Since I'll be taking my daughter to that class tonight, I'll be sure to stop by the sandwich shop and pay my debt. :D

I actually think it is quite sad that so many of us on this thread have acknowledged, (myself included unfortunately) that they would even consider keeping the stuff.

Contact them, let them know what happened and maybe you'll get to keep it after all. If not, you'll have done the right thing.

Sounds like a lot of people here are building up their good karma. I'd call the company because I would consider myself a thief if I didn't let them know an error was made. As far as good karma coming back, it isn't good karma if you know you are doing something that's not right.
Reminds me about one time I went with a friend to an outdoor resturant and as I was walking out, I saw a 20 on the floor. I picked it up and was really happy because it covered the food. I took a few more steps and the waitress came running up to me. She looked me in the eyes and asked if I had seen any money on the floor. I handed over the money, but I felt so bad. Normally I return money I find, but this one time, my greed overruled my honesty and I got busted. That was over 15 years ago and I still blush when I think back on it.

Keep it! The company has made plenty of profit off you and others already. If you made the same mistake you'd pay for it. And, if you call them back, some poor guy in the shipping department (who is probably under paid and under trained anyway) is going to get his butt reamed for screwing up! Consider it the price that company pays for screwing up.

plus, all the time you wait on hold to talk to the right people to explain the mistake and the time to package it and take it to the post office, you will have earned it.

Hypothetically.

I was torn between the Rebel and the Pro1. I knew if I went with the Rebel my hobbie would get really expensive. So I went the way of the 8MP Prosumer with the L series glass. Can't add a whole lot to it. We I do have the adapter now so I guess I'll add the x2 telephoto and maybe the close (Supermacro already rocks on this thing).

I love the camera myself, I shoot primarily on the creative side of the dial (haven't used any of the presets) using full manual now more than anything else. The picture quality is awesome and it does not struggle in low light situations as reviews will state. AF shutter lag through the EVF is no worse than the Minolta A2, I set it to singe shot AF and have no problems shooting planes, birds, cars etc.

It is a great camera and you should see some cool stuff out of it soon, I had it for about a full month now and taken some killer shots with it. But killer shots around here dosen't necessarily mean high votes :)

This comes from someone whose profile says, and I quote: "I'm a honest guy, sometimes brutally honest."

I was living in Boston at the time. Unfortunately, now I'm in Minneapolis and we don't have them here.

A clouple of days ago I was using the self check-out at Wal-Mart and when I took my cash-back from the machine, I found an extra $5. Obviously missed by the person ahead of me.

There was no hesitation. I took it to the person wtching over the machines and told her what had happened. She marked it to hold in case the real owner came back.

The best part was that my two daughters (10 & 14) never even questioned why I did that. No "Dad. Why don't you keep it and buy us some candy with it?" type of remarks. It showed that they had learned from my examples in the past what was right and wrong. I was so proud of them I bought them each a soda.

UPDATE:

The company who hypothetically shipped the hypothetical merchandise in question has been hypothetically contacted. The CSR reported, hypothetically of course, that the order was for part number originally ordered and that if any other item was received, it was not noted on the order, so (his hypothetical exact words) "Merry Christmas, between you and me." So hypothetically, all's well that ends well and I feel better. Hypothetically speaking, of course. :o)

So, hypothetically, what did you come away with?
06/11/2004 10:13:25 AM · #46
Well, it's probably no big deal to the DSLR crowd, but I had ordered the little $20 lens adapter for my new camera, and they sent me the $170 wide angle lens instead. Go figure. Hypothetically, anyway. :o)

Hypothetically speaking, I would be doing the snoopy happy dance. :) So, gonna try ordering that $20 lens adapter again? ;)

Yeah, so I can use the new lens! :o)

Snoopy away! :)

edit: I'd also like to report that no hypothetical packing clerk was reprimanded, fired, or otherwise harmed in any way in the making of the aforementioned hypothetical phone call. :o)

I think you gotta do two happy dances- one for the satisfaction that comes with knowing you did the right thing and one for getting a WA lens at a great price. There was an old song, by The Gentrys I believe, "Keep On Dancin'".
06/11/2004 12:06:14 PM · #50
what happens if you order the adapter and then they send you another lens?
