The voting on deep-DOF has been interesting for me. I've heard people comment in the past that their scores tend to be high early on, and then quickly drop of before leveling out at the lower end of that. But for me, my score has been steadily rising since Monday morning. Very odd indeed. My cutesy little graph is here, if anyone wants to see what I mean. I guess my team sports entry did a little of the same thing, now that I'm looking at it, but started of with a few big votes.
What I'm wondering is, do people tend to go back and change many votes once you've already taken a first pass through all the entries? This particular challenge seemed to surprise a lot of people who felt like many entrants didn't really capture the idea of deep-DOF as they were expecting (see this thread). Perhaps people felt like my image, which isn't great, but does have a very good depth-of-field, ended up meeting the challenge more than they first thought, and are changing votes? Or maybe people are just getting more generous as the week goes on.
I tend to go through all the results in thumbnail style after I've voted, and almost always leave them alone, changing only a couple that I feel I might have short-changed in the grand-scheme of things. How do others do it? |

I do always go back through after they are all organized by the score I gave them. It helps put them in perspective for me and to give each one a last real thought process to make sure I am being fair and consistent. I have a hard time, like many, giving a low score to a great photo -- but doesn't meet the challenge and vice-versa. I have actually upped a lot of mine this time.

I don't change many, but after I'm done voting on all the entries, I almost always go back and change a few--usually higher. I tend to not give out any 9s or 10s in the first round. Then when I'm done, I'll revisit my 7s and 8s, and split those out more--make 1 a 10, 1 or 2 a 9, and so forth. |

Do you all tend to hold the same "standard" through all challenges or adjust your scores based on the entries? For instance, say a challenge has a weaker set of entries . . . would you give higher scores the best of those, even though those same shots would be a lower score in general? Hopefully, that makes sense;0)

I tend to keep the same standard for all challenges. To me, a 10 is an image that I don't think can be improved. In some challenges the highest score I give is an 8 or 9.

cpanaioti beat me to it, this is exactly the way I view it. I rate on an absolute scale, in general, because I don't know until I get all the way through whether the overall entries are on the better or worse side.

That's about exactly what I do. The same goes for the bottom end of the spectrum, I almost never give out 1's or 2's, and rarely 3's the first pass through, but when I go back, I see more of what really deserves to be sorted out, up or down, more. I still rarely end up with 1's or 2's. :o)

Always - I run through them all really really quickly, then go back a few days later and re hash about 30% of them. I generally braden the range too. |

I usually toss the images I like best on a quick look through into my "bucket" which is defined as the number 7. It's pretty rare that I drop something out of the bucket. If I do, it's usually just down to a 6. From there I go through over 3-4 days and vote on everything else. Those images usually end up being 4,5,6's. Some get dropped into 7.
Once I'm done voting, I go back to 7 and take time to look hard at every image. This is where my 8/9/10s come from. Once that's done I go back to the lower scoring images and see if there are any that jump at me. Often I give an interesting shot a second long look. Then I go and comment.
Takes me most of the week, but all and all I'm happy with the votes I give. :)

Hi Kylie,
For me, when I vote, I vote the same way all the time. I have my set of criteria, and determine the number accordinly. So, in a weak challenge, the best of the bunch does not get the 10... it gets what I think it deserves as a photo. So, for weak challenges, I can see that I do this and some people give the best of the bunch a 10, then there may be some massive chaos in the results. But I always vote the same way.
If a photo can't be improved because it's perfect, I give it a 10. I rarely give out 10's, but I give lots of 8 & 9 pointers. If a photo meets the challenge but is not so great, I start with a 3 and go up from there. Most photos are pretty okay. My votes usually range from 3 to 9. I have voted 1 and 2 for really horrible, thoughtless photos, but it's rare. I never compare my photo to others, so I don't base my votes off of it (which I think some people might do to help their score). I just know that I am not nearly the best and I have to put myself in my place!
I always go back and look at the thumbs after I vote to see if I need to move a few. It helps that they are categorized so nicely. I move some up and some down, usually one stop, rarely more. It's like choosing your favorite of 200 CDs and placing them in order. You know which ones are in the top 10, but the rest need some time and thought in order to rank them right!

Very well put. I just want to thank the designers for giving us that nice order at the end -- helps immensely. Also thought it was interesting that you use "stops" in your voting . . . . . the terminology gets deeply ingrained! LOL
