Use paper cutouts to provide the impact of your shot. Refer to this thread for more information.

Not sure why you've decided to call it "Kitsch" other than Cutout's editorializing in the original thread. No, it's not fine art, but neither are a lot of things we're asked to shoot here.

kitsch is an invitation to sarcasm & general wittiness. That sounds like fun to me.

No doubt, and a Kitsch challenge would be fine - I just don't see the connection, or the reason to limit your kitschiness to cutouts.

Maybe it will come to you...give it time.

I really don't see a connection between paper cutouts referenced in that thread and kitsch, unless it's a sort of mid century ephemera, etc.

I'm thinking Cutout thought the idea/photos from that thread were a little cheesy/precious/cutesy/kitschy...I could be wrong.

As an art movement, lifestyle, or literature and film genre, kitsch is pleasingly distasteful. It's melodramatic, overdone, gaudy and tacky or sentimental and folksy. (from the urban dictionary)

When I looked at that artist's drawings I got a 'pleasingly distasteful' feeling due to the overdone, overidelized, overpopularized, tacky, exaggerated rendering of the female form--& then to cut holes in the paper, to show the 'real life' scenery in another 'pleasingly distasteful' contrast...well, kitsch hit the nail on the head for me.

But, apparently only me.

I apologize if I offended anyone's sensibilities & give Robert free reign to choose a better title.

I'm not disagreeing with your assessment of what the original artist did and how they presented their work. I'm not a fan of it.

But with that said, I don't think it's a bad idea for a challenge. My issue with "Kitsch" as the challenge name is that you're implying that the image should be lowbrow, and I think that it would be interesting to see what folks can do with this in a way that isn't. As a challenge that utilizes a cut-out drawing I'm already full of ideas. As a kitsch challenge I'll take a pass.

Jake I'd be sorry if you took a pass. I admit, it seems to be asking you to do 2 things at once that may not be comfortable together. Also, those who miss the description would be in for an unpleasant surprise. So, my question is--what do you suggest for a title? How about "Shooting Through It"?

And, to be clear, for me there is no connection between 'kitsch' and 'low brow.' 'Kitsch' is not a value judgement, does not imply artistic bad taste. Gaudy & tacky can be fun.

To further be clear, the idea of taking a composition, printing it out, cutting holes in it, holding it up to let reality shine thru, and then photographing it -- is definitely kitschy.

Could you be comfortable with a special rule that says failing to achieve Kitsch is not grounds for DQ or a lowball vote?

I'm all in favor of changing the title to this challenge-in-the-works, but I'm stymied as to what the title SHOULD be. Suggestions greatly appreciated.

To try and be clear here, I'd be all for a "Kitsch" challenge that didn't require the cutout thing, and I'm all for a cutout/shoot-thru challenge that allows me to be something other than "kitsch".

I'll leave it to the OP as to what to make this particular challenge suggestion. "Kitsch" is fine for me if we want to go for something, um, kitsch. As for the topic of the linked thread, if I was to come up with a title I'm thinking "Stencilography". :)

Go, Annie!

I like the idea of your suggestion.

I would like a paper figure/cut out challenge.

Still not sure the topic name is correct.

To go with the crowd I usually disagree with... (ha)... I think we're being limited by the new title.

"Paper Cutouts" seems to be a great topic!

I'd love it if everyone would include paper that's been cut in their image... but... according to the past... no matter what one calls it, some won't do it.

:D

Still... I'm in ... no matter the name.
