I love these discussions. When voting I avoid reading the titles & I try to forget what challenge it is. I just vote on each one, one at a time. I don't vote DNMC. I use the whole scale. I don't comment as much as I used to.

No. Even numbers only. No one's, no fives.

I very rarely give out tens these days.

A pretty awesome photo that is quite creative and unique gets an eight.

An image that has been done 1000 times before gets between a four and six even if it's well done! Probably usually a six.

I used to hand out ones in the beginning but very rarely give them anymore, I do however hand them out to photos that are offensive, or I just don't vote on it!

If it does not meet challenge, it usually receives between two and three, even if it's a good photo I know some people disagree with this but what is the point of a challenge theme if you're going to break the rules!

Well, there IS no score "between two or three" so I assume you mean you "usually give it a two or a three"? But more to the point, the challenge topics and descriptions are NOT rules and just because YOU don't see the connection to the theme doesn't mean there isn't one. I don't mean *you* particularly, Anita, but IMO a lot of folks are WAY to quick to assume DNMC and it's a shame. For me, when I see an image and have no clue how it relates to the topic, that makes me stop and think, wondering what I've missed. I've found a lot of cool stuff that way :-)

What I meant is sometimes I give it a two sometimes a three. There is does not meet challenge and there's a nice shoehorn I will vote more higher on the shoehorn image.

Thank you all for sharing your thoughts! It was really interesting and helpful to read it all :)

I have not quite decided how to continue, but as some of you have noted it may take years to come up with a somewhat consistent "system" and even then it may change from challenge to challenge or even during one voting. Until now I have done two rounds of scoring: an initial scoring using 5-10 and then a second one where I bump the images I like up and occasionally, but very rarely, down the ones I don't like down. I think I might end up with a 3-round system inspired by wbanning's, where I start with "dividing" the images in two groups engaging/nor engaging. It will be time consuming at first, but I think it will help me in the long run as the voting process (at least for me) isn't just about giving as score, but of course also about studying y'all work and get better and hopefully one day become the photographer I would like to be.

Thanks!
Arna Marie :)

(P.S. If anyone have the time and of course feel like it, then I would be forever grateful for some feedback on my last two entries Liquid II and In the style of MEM. I realised that my choice of subject was not great in either challenge, but I would really appreciate some tips on how I could have made these poorly chosen subjects more interesting (for example angle, aperture/ISO/shutter speed, colour, editing). Also, if you want to make an educated guess on what the 1s and 2s I received mean, then I would be thankful for that too. If so, don't be afraid to be honest/brutal. I have already received the votes so more critique will not harm my confidence. In fact it might just make me more confident before the next challenge because I know I will have learned something in the meantime :) )

the critique club is back in full effect as well if you'd like their input on future entries. just click the checkbox when entering.
as for how you're going to vote, whatever works for you, go for it, just don't let others tell you what is good. :)

+1
IMO the challenge topic is to guide the photographer, not the voter.

The voting rules suggest otherwise ...
