My beloved padre is going to Europe as the history guru on a cruise ship. He called me today and said, "I want to get a digital camera." This is the same parent who took 8 years to learn how to program the clock on the VCR.
So- what do you suggest to your parent when they want a digi cam for basically taking snapshots. One thing to keep in mind, he's got big hands. So an ultra compact model might not be best.
I have 3 hours to come up with something. Help!
Clara- and as payment for my services, he's gonna get me Photoshop and some more memory. :) I love my daddy!

Well, I know that I don't know much, but for once I can brag on my little camera instead of whine about it...because for snapshots, it does a really nice job. I have a Sony DSC-P32. They're really inexpensive now (mine was $149.00), and it's easy to use. I would imagine anything in this particular Sony line would be acceptable and he would be pleased with the results. Just my two cents worth! :o)

I've got a Powershot A80 and it's about the same size as your normal 35mm point and shoot. If he can use one of those then the A80 might be a good choice. |

My dad is also computer illiterate and I got him a 4.0 kodak digital camera with the dock. It was the most simple camera to use, just point and shoot and very easy options. Once he is done he just puts it in the dock pushes the transfer button and right away his pc knows the camera is there and it transfers the pictures to kodaks software.

You know that reminds me of my girlfriends parents. She got them one of those Kodak's with the little dock and they are really computer illiterate. They have been able to really use it well. I retract my previous advice. |

I would, also, say the Kodak with the docking station would be a good choice for it's ease of transfer to the computer. Photos are decent, too. |

How about a printer with a built in card reader? If you are worried about your dad using a PC and you think the chances of him wanting to learn photo-editing software might be too much, you could think about a nice printer that prints strait from the memory card. I̢۪ve seen them with built in LCD displays as well. And then you could save up and take your time to add a PC later if you still wanted to. My $0.02

*cringe* I have these horrible nightmare thoughts of trying to walk my dad through what to do when the printing is off center. ;)
He's actually getting a new printer, but he's a writer so he's pretty text heavy. He also doesn't want to print his own images. *shrug* I can lead the old horse to water...:)
He's actually going on a tech buying spree. He's getting a new printer, the camera, a DVD player, and an MP3 player. He's been instructed to take my younger brother along with him.

LOL. In a similar position last Christmas with my Girlfriend's father, we opted for the Canon A80. Results so far: unsurpassed delight.

I agree with the A80 or A75 or you can get a great deal on the A60 nowadays. Still a fine, easy to use camera. Put it on P mode, and he can still change white balance and such, or put it on Auto, and point and shoot! |
