Hi fellow members,

A Nikon D70 or a Canon Rebel etc. are more than I can
I can afford right now,
but I definitely want to upgrade from my entry level
Kodak cx6230. I'm willing to spend as much as 500 dolars
for the upgrade. The cameras I"m thinking of getting are
the currently popular Canon A80, or go with the
totally new (and thus unreviewed) 5mp- Kodak LS 753
or the 6mp- Kodak DX 7630. Are those worth buying?
If not, any other suggestions?
FYI...I have little photography experience beyond
the snapshots at birthday parties and the like.
But would really love to learn a new hobby.
All help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

How much is Fuji S602 right now? That's a heck of a cam, too!

I'm really happy with my Sony DSC-F717, which I believe is in that price range now.

I like the Canon S50! I chose between the S50 and the A80, and went with the S50 because it's cheaper. If you are going to use an external flash, or external filters, then go with the A80.

Thread from where I was looking to buy a camera in the same price range...

I was interested in the Kodak DX6490 because of the 10x optical zoom and manual controls. They mention a couple of alternatives in the thread as well. Hope this helps! :o)

Fuji S5000 on sale at Ritz for $380, a good price on a pretty full featured cam; 10x zoom, CAF, files up to 6mp, uses AA batteries.

You can get the Pentax Optio 555 for around or under $500. I am continuously amazed at the quality of images I get from that camera. A good number of the images in my Photo A Day Gallery were taken with that camera, as were almost all of my vacation photos from my trip to the Bahamas.

It's easy to use, small, has a decent optical zoom (5x) and great macro feature. 5mp. Full manual features. I sometimes find the pic to pic speed a bit slow, but then I'm spoiled by my DSLR ;) All in all, a camera I'm very happy to have bought and would buy again in a heart-beat.

I don't know too much about the other cameras you mentioned, but I will say that the 3x zoom on the Canon A80 is a bit limiting. And it really struggles to focus in low light. I thought technology was supposed to be improving but my Olympus C2100 copes much better with low light despite its age. I just wish it wasn't only 2mp because I really love that camera.

Check out the Canon S500...

I don't know how much is it now where you live and if it's in your price range, but if you can aford one F717 is the cam. I'm 100% satisfied with mine.

The F717 has been discontinued, for the F828.

However, you still see them around sometimes, for low prices...very low..bites hand thinking about how much I paid for mine.

That being said, its an awesome camera.

I second that. I'm still finding new features on mine. It's been excellent.

Nathaniel,

What features do you like or dislike on your current camera. There's so many cameras out now and so many that comes on the market all the time.

What type of pictures do you like take, or want to take. Interiors (Wide), faraway shots (Tele),night shots (long exposure, Sony's nightshot mode), action shots (faster shutter speed), lightweight, carry anyplace, etc.

Lots of folks on here have sold or have for sale really good cams with all the accessories, I suggest buying a used one from a dpcer. Zeuszen had a great bunch of stuff with his sony 717 and i think some just had a minolta 7i for sale too... you may want to think about that, you get a much better cam for much less.

Hi fellow members,
Firstly, thanks for the recommendations from you all.
Sorry for neglecting to mention my other camera needs.
Besides being $500 dollars and below, I want one that
that's good all around. Good at macro, landscape,
nighttime, action, portrait etc. Basically one camera that would
do fine for all of these club challenges.
I don't know enough right now to utilize all of the
features of a camera rich with manual settings, so
auto focus would is fine for now. Image accuracy
is most important to me. Crispness and naturalness of
color, light and dark.

I can't be happier with my Sony f707 (now the 717). The reason I bought this camera was it's ability to have the smallest aperture I could find in a digital camera (for that price), and for its ability to get REALLY close macro shots (just over 1 cm!). It handles color well, I also love how I can recharge it easily (I don't have to fiddle with batteries.

Good luck!

If you are lucky, you can get a Fuji s7000 for under $399 (with the $100 rebate)...

That would be an EXCELENT camera for your $$. I love my 602s, and the s7000 is basically the same camera with a better CCD on it.

I have a Panasonic Lumix FZ10 which I think you can get for around $500 or slightly over. It has a 12X Image Stabilizing Leica Zoom Lens which has F2.8 throughout the lens. It is an amazing camera. It also has a hot shoe for an external flash and all the other bells and whistles you could ask for.

I think a Nikon Coolpix 995 should be running in that price range now. It was $1000 when I first bought mine a couple of years ago. Full manual controls - shutter speed, aperature, "film speed", zoom lens, etc., as well as a downright amazing macro lens. I've upgraded and no longer use mine, and of course, everyone will tell you that theirs is the best, but that was one of the best cameras ever, and I'd still be using it if it were more than 3.3 megapixels. I actually used it professionally for over a year.

I second this chap! I was torn between the S50 and the G5, and the ultimate decision came down to the fact that although the G5 looks better, the S50 does actually fit into my pocket. for a first DC i felt that was important. however, if this is your second or more camera, i'd recommend the G5 - it's essentially identical to the S50, but with a better lens (and looks gorgeous). I'd be wary of the S500 (ixus) though, it's the pinnical in design packaging, but i would not expect it to have all the same functions as the bigger brothers, and you are ultimately paying a bit of a premium for fancy design.

editted to add that just browsing the canon site, and it would appear that the S50 has been improved to the S60 - and quite frankly, it looks the bees knees!

Slowest shuuter speed is only 2 sec. though, so quite limiting

I'll second that!
4 Megapixels are more than enough for most people, and here are a few other features of the FZ10:
4 shots a second burst mode.
Looks great.
Great colour reproduction.
REALLY sharp lens all the way though the zoom.
ISO 50-400

The important thing as far as I'm concerned is that stabilised zoom from 35mm to 420mm (35mm equivalent), which increases the possible range of shots at your fingertips from almost every single camera mentioned, which will increase your ribbon winning chances!

Asume that Canon A80 is fine camera. Have never tried it but used A70, which is basically the same camera just fewer pixels, for few month and liked it very much though of course you probably will soon start to push the limits.
Think Olympus also have a similar camera for that price.
