Just have a look at this.

Punditfact (a branch of politifact) found that the Media are a bunch of liars. Hell, even my cynical ass is stunned.

Turns out Fox news is the worst, with 21% being 'true', and of that 21% 12% are only 'mostly true'. That leaves less than 1/10th of their content as being 'trustworthy', and a full 10% is rated at 'Pants on Fire', which I assume means that they are just spouting pure unadulterated bullshit.

CNN is apparently the best major news outlet, with a still paltry 57% true rating.

I have no idea how we fix this, but it's clear we have a very serious problem in America today.

Careful Cory, casual readers are going to mistake you for a liberal ... ;-)

Wow. I think I tend to be pretty cynical, but I would have never guessed the true/mostly true numbers were actually that low.

I'm surprised they are that high. For what its worth, the media in the country isn't the problem, the viewers are.

I don't know... As much as I'm a cynic, I don't think I want to live in a country full of them.

This seems pretty close to victim blaming to me, as I see it it's a damned shame that the media are squandering the trust people have had in them for ages now.

Really, I mean, what's left for us to have faith in? We know we can't trust the politicians, nor the police, nor the media. It's a pretty sad state of affairs folks.

Not just US. I remember this story. You couldn't make it up. (Oh, actually...)

A misunderstanding is understandable but all those made up details...

i say we start putting the potifact ratings up in the tv guide kind of like how you get rotten tomatoes movie ratings when searching or movies.

cynic noun: Someone who looks both ways before crossing a one-way street.

A big part of the problem is (as with many important public services) that the primary purpose of the media today is to generate profit for the corporate shareholders, by whatever means possible.

FWIW I get most of my news from NPR, which is less beholden to corporate funding (about 1/3 from corporate underwriting, and about 60% from public contributions).

You mean that this isn't something that EVERYONE does?!? ;-)

(seriously though, I do this, always... I've seen too many cars headed the wrong way on a 1-way street, and have, on occasion, even been guilty of the same myself.)

or we could start running disclaimers on the screen.

Wait, I thought you were talking about the news media? Of course FOX lies, because they don't have an ounce of journalistic integrity. Try to find stats for the print media, which no one reads much anymore, and the story will be much different. And, no, I am not talking about USA Today or the Washington Times. Media that keeps its opinions on the Op/Ed page where they belong, regardless of political bent. So, yeah, both the NY Times and the Wall Street Journal count.

I used to work in the neighborhood south of the UC Berkeley campus, which is mostly a network of one-way streets. One day I had to walk to the bank downtown, and during the course of that walk (see map) I observed three different cars going the wrong way on a one-way street ...

It's at the local level too. A couple years ago one of our stations was bought out, and they fired pretty much everyone, and I mean everyone. They brought in a Barbie from Flordia, a Ken from somewhere I don't remember, and some pretty young talent for weather and sports. They were the face of our local news, and they couldn't pronounce the cities. They did promos describing just how happy they were to be here in our beautiful city, like they'd longed for years to be here. (Update: After just a couple years, Barbie has already moved on.)

I don't watch much local news (I read it from their sites), but this takeover made me mad, and I researched our local news companies. We found that only one was still, even remotely, locally owned, so we switched over to them and their normal looking anchors.

Conan O'Brien has a segment on his show called "Newscasters Agree" which enrages me.

YouTube search results for "Newscasters Agree"

FOX News is clearly total BS, but one day I watched, for kicks. Then later I watched The Daily Show, and they joked about an interview I had watched on FOX. They completely took it out of context, which changed the meaning of what was said. Okay, I get it, it's a comedy show, but dammit! I just want news, dammit. *cry*

Ps, I also look both ways on a one-way street: for cars and pedestrians. There's a one-way in particular that I cross frequently to get home, and I've seen no less than 3 cars going the wrong way in 10 years. That's not bad, but it's still 3 that could have schmooshed me.

The sad part is that people that don't pay much attention flip through news channels as if they are all equal.

I get 0% of my news from TV - I think I stopped watching after the 2000 Election - but it just seems like Fox is the frequent choice for Hotel lobbies and diners whenever I'm not in an urban area. People want the truth (I assume?) but aren't willing to find sources of it and make blanket statements like "they are all liars" and the like.

Outfoxed is my main source for clips from Fox News ;)

Cory Cory, I can't believe it took you this long to figure it out!

There's only one news source I look to and believe, the rest is mostly biased and full of political correctness, which I HATE!

Who's that? My source has been CNN for years, and I've always held a certain amount of distrust for them, but 57% is BAD (and the fact that this is the BEST?!?! WTF!) And this certainly isn't news to me, but the magnitude is a little startling.

BBC Seems to be good, I've always found them less biased, or at least, biased differently.

But really, I am honestly curious, who do you trust and find reliable Anita?

Oh my gosh. That's horrible! And it's painfully obvious they're reading something off a telepromter they haven't even seen before.

Oh, come on Anita! That's a total cop out! I'm curious as well as to who you've found who report the truth on global geopolitical events. Don't be coy.

I may be a blue state, NPR listening guy, but I always figured that people who watched FOX news just wanted confirmation of a shared opinion rather than facts, the truth,
etc.

This is a funny sketch about the news The many deaths of Gerald Ford
