Not sure of the definition, but mine required an extension tube so I thought it was safely a macro.

My first idea was just with my 18-55 and not really being macro was one of the reasons I decided not to use it.

We only ever have a few real macro shots in these challenges, most of them are only close-ups.

However, in THIS challenge, there are a number that aren't even a real close-up, let alone macro!

I still found enough that I liked, though :-)

FWIW, by definition a macro is an image that's captured at a 1:1 or greater reproduction ratio at the film/sensor plane. That is to say, if you shot an actual color slide of a dime at 1:1 and then laid the dime on top of the slide, then it would line up exactly. Of course, the sensor image is MUCH smaller than what we're viewing on the screen (more like the thumbnail than like the image we vote on) and so we see a much-larger-than-life reproduction of a true macro on our screen. So I'm not sure the strict definition of "macro" has meaning for us.

At the same time, MANY subjects can be shot in true macro and have absolutely no sense of scale whatsoever, so some of these images that don't "look" macro may, in fact, BE true macros. That's one of the interesting aspects of shooting "inanimate" macros: with most living subjects, there's a reasonable sense of scale built in to the image (bug's wings and eyes, pollen granules on flower stamens and pistils, stuff like that) but we often don't have any of that with the inanimate objects, and what "scale" we SEEM to have can be wildly misleading. My own entry is very deceptive from a scaling POV, but it's a true 1:1 macro...

I found this page which makes it clear.

I took mine with 5x extension tubes. The subject is only few mm large and it fills my whole picture.
(BTW I bought those tubes on ebay for 0.99$) And the result I have with it is really amazing. (when using it with my 40mm pancake I need to adjust with the tripod and it takes a lot of time to get a real sharp picture, when using a zoom lens I can zoom in and out but the picture is not ultra sharp)

I have a true macro lens, but chose not to use it because I was reading recently about macro shots with lenses that are not usually thought of as macro. I thought I would try something new (for me) and I like the results, but I'm afraid many will look at it with the DNMC mindset even though the lens was nearly touching the object. On the other hand, I have received some really nice comments. In the end, as always, I just enter what I want to enter (within the rules, of course, except when I forget to read them and get a DQ).

The really great thing about this entry is the fact that I've learned how to expand my use of one of my lenses and I can already think of things I want to do with it now that I have an idea of what it can do on the macro end of things.

It's always good to learn....

The 1 on vote 57 (which, it could be argued, I deserved) dropped me to my 5th lowest score ever.

91st place or lower, and I'll set my own lowest percentile finish record.

vote 71 popped my dream of top 10
for 3 days the same score and with 1 vote, down by almost a full point.

I'm back on the way down again. Just as well I was given low expectations from the start!

Yes . . . the inevitable downward trend as rollover approaches. After a slow steady climb for the last 3 days, I have given up those gains now in 1 day. It's funny how this always seems to happen.

Well, I managed to climb up to a 5.94 through the weekend, but then I hit a few unimpressed viewers and dropped down to under a 5.9. Just hoping now that it doesn't drop too much more in the next day.

After a small rally earlier today, where I had delusions of reaching 5.0 again, I've slipped a little.
