Put them on vibrate and put it down your pants too ..... only joking.
I went to Paris with Wife and 2 Leica's we never had any trouble at all. I used my Lowepro back trekkor when zipped up and you are wearing it makes it impossible to get into it without taking it off. |
yes, the bag I presently have everything is inside...no outside pkts...except for a water bottle. Problem is no place to carry a Tripod and I'll need that for sure...need to "rig" something up...hmmmm or get a new bag... |

You could extend one leg (and maybe wrap a towel around the "neck") and use it like a walking-stick ...
Also useful for "detaining" pickpockets ...

Janine, you will have such a fine time. You are blessed indeed to have your daughters going with you. When I travel, I keep a small purse on the inside for money & documents, a big purse on the outside for stuff. Ask your phone service carrier about roaming charges. I change my money as I go. I think you need a small, pocket camera--fast & easy to carry, inconspicuous in crowds--as your backup camera. Get a monopod--you can put the pocket camera on the monopod over your head & get interesting shots that way. Bring back tons of photos, please!

that brings up another interesting question. I REALLY don't want to take my laptop as you know it's better used as an anchor right now and there's no way to "upgrade" before I go. So here is my dilemma. Can I hook my WD Passport up to the hotel's computer (in the business center) to be able to download/transfer my photo's from camera to that or do I have to take my laptop as well...it's getting really hard to edit anything anymore on it...it will take me up to 2 hours to do one simple edit and often it will crash along the way...ish...it works good for e-mails etc but NOT for editing!!! Here in the states I just "deal with it"...but I'm not sure I want to drag it along just to "download the pictures"....any suggestions?
I know I could get more SD cards and larger ones but I'm hoping there might be another alternative??? |

I didn't take a laptop... just a BUNCH of cards... and kept them safe (in different places after they were used).
No... I didn't have a pickpocket problem, but I heard MANY first-hand stories. They weren't pretty.
I took everything I had ... all zipped up... inside a zipped up larger bag.
I had no problems, but I zipped up EVERY time I unzipped.
Even for two seconds. It got to be habit. But... it needs to be HABIT BEFORE you get there.
I heard really, really BAD stories about folks who got hit before they got to deposit into their hotel safe.
Phone service... needs to be altered to allow global data and international calls... See your service provider. Ha!

No don't take your laptop. Upgrade your cards & get a card wallet to keep them in. You will never have time to download/edit. Or if you do, yur doin it rong!
If you deplane looking like an American tourist you will draw all kinds of attention you don't want.

I think a group of 9 giggling women would be hard to miss!!! But I'll do my best. and we're not all arriving at the same time.
I'm one of these people that has their car keys in hand (actually between my fingers to act as a weapon) and I walk with a purpose and am scanning the area all the way to the car. And I'm already in the habit of zipping up (well with my bags at least)...
Good idea for the Card Holder...do you just use a regular CC holder or do you use a little cosmetic bag??? Either would work |

My experience from a few years ago was that WiFi was not dependable in the hotels (one out of three of ours was ok). And I never saw a business office. Once I used the computer at the front desk to send an email but even that was a little tricky as their keys are in different places!
Pickpockets, yes... watch out. Hang onto everything, particularly on the Metro or in any crowded spaces. My older daughter got hit while we were standing right next to her.
And it was STILL one of our more memorable vacations ever. If I could, I'd visit often.

I have a special card wallet AND I keep it in a little cosmetics bag.
Oh, & one other thing I learned to call ahead the day of your departure to check on your flight. It may not leave on time. I spent 24 hours in the Paris airport, in a separate area for travelers waiting for their flight, given free food to eat, sleeping on the floor, etc. And the trip through Customs on the way home is just wierd. |

Alright...I'm back. I'm trying to decide if I should get a travel tripod/monopod??? And I know that many of you have them...so my questions are price point, function, ease of use...I know that vawendy has one and really doesn't like it at all because it's not "quick" to use. So I want to avoid that and I would really like to have 3 features on it. That one of the legs makes a monopod, the legs can fold up and how low it can go.
What do you recommend? |

I recommend not worrying about tri/mono/pods at all. If you can't deal with it via high ISO, then don't bother. A vacation should be a vacation, and schlepping around full kit plus tripod is just too much, IMO. Take a beanbag, buy some dried beans when you get over there, and you can use that very effectively in a lot of places, includinf between your camera and a vertical surface so you can wedge the camera and shoot at slower shutter speeds. |

If you love impressionism, yes, stay on line for it.
But for 11 euro you can go to Musee d'Orsay musee orsay and have a more comprehensive view, impressionists also.
It depends on what you look for. The Musee Carnavalet carnavalet
is free, in a great neighborhood (Marais) and in my view extraordinary. |

Musee d'Orsay was my favorite of the museums we visited. When we bought the tickets, there was a package that included the d'Orsay and Musee l'Orangerie for 15eu. You didn't have to go to both on the same day either. Well worth it.
I was just there for 3 1/2 weeks in September. You folks will have a fantastic time. If I can think of things to suggest I'll post back. |

With the Paris Museum Pass you can also visit Versailles ;) The fountain area is extra $ though. It's a great day trip. Very accessible via the metro/RER. I have a to see list for next time and wished I had seen the Sainte-Chapelle Church. So close to Notre Dame which we walked through but it closes at 6pm so we did not make it. |

We are going to do the Paris Museum Pass (42 E for 2 days/56 E for 4 days)...not sure which I'll do...there are several places that we have on the list...
Notre Dame (towers) - not sure if they are open or not. The website isn't clear on that.
Versailles
Sainte-Chapelle (definite)
Musee d'Orsay
Place de la Concorde
Louve and others
Also paying extra for the Paris Grande Opera
The Jeu de Paume has a photography section that's what caught my eye but it's not on the Paris Museum Pass...wasn't sure if it would be worthwhile to pay extra for it or just do the d'Orsay or Musée de l'Orangerie but I'm guessing they don't have any photography???

The Jeu de Paume would be worth it for the Garry Winogrand expo alone, I'm thinking about going up there just for that, and of course the superb street photography one can do in Paris. Have a great trip. |

I highly recommend the Centre Pompidou museum. I don't see it mentioned here, but I believe it's listed on the Paris Pass.
It looks like Jeu de Paume right now has the Garry WInogrand show that was recently here in NY. Well worth seeing. Also check out musee orangerie, which appears to have expanded.

Don't forget not to do too much site seeing. Leave at least two days for no planning at all. Walk, enjoy, eat, etc. |

I know that we are going to do some district walking in some quaint areas. One is near the Sainte-Micheal RER, the other Sainte-Paul - Saint Paul Village, oh and Rue Claire.
Bear you'll like this!!! We are going to have a lunch done for us with a French Chef. Originally we were going to have part of the day shopping for the ingredients at the local street markets then come back and prepare...but that was STUPID expensive so we settled on lunch instead. I'm hoping the flower markets will be a vibrant as I remember them...sigh |

Have a great time, enjoy yourself and do take the time to sample some fine wines, cheeses, baguettes and the occasional Pernod.
Safe trip and take oodles of photos.
