Shhh! If our collective sigh of relief is too loud there might be malevolent repercussions.

I'd rather have a minimal editing challenge than an expert.

Why?

I didn't enter but I think it is a good system to let people try to find the shot 'in camera' instead of relying on Photoshop or Lightroom to 'create' a shot with regard to Composition, Light/Shaddows, exposure etc.

Just my opinion of cause.

because i'm OCD and it aggravates me that i cant fix a flaw. i actually dont mind them occasionally, but three in arow was dumb, as was three in a row of expert.

I actually used the opportunity to discover and experiment with settings that I've never used on my camera, that I've had for 6 1/2 years.

Well, I will say that over all "quality" of the photos has really improved since we started with the Minimal Editing rule set...I'm quite impressed with the Architecture right now...quite a few entries...look REALLY good...

And that's happened because we've learned quite a bit about minimal editing...in camera settings (a good thing), what sharpening can do alone (or several applications there to), composition and lighting, HOW TO FREAKING CLEAN OUR EQUIPMENT....again it's making us better photographers by far...NOT a bad thing at all

Really? I felt that way when the 3 expert editing challenges were over!

I enjoy minimal challenges as well although I wouldn't want them all to be minimal all the time. And while I usually enjoy voting on the expert challenges I don't enter them because my PP skills are not adequate.

I agree. Those who say they prefer to get by with minimal editing skills are rationalizing laziness.

I don't think that anyone is advocating "getting by with minimal editing skills". I think (well, speaking for myself at least) we are advocating learning to use the features of your camera. I don't begrudge Expert challenges, but I do think we should have Minimals to balance them out.

Do you think it's laziness to learn how to use the features of your camera to create a decent photograph?

i was going to write something similar but its not laziness when you are setting, shooting and hoping, over and over that your camera gets the output right, its a effort in tedious futility. no thanks.

give me RAW where i set the shot and capture every ounce of information my sensor can handle and let ME fine tune the output.

What? Sorry but I don't see getting composition, exposure, and focus correct in camera as "lazy". In fact, it makes more sense that saying to one's self "I'll fix it in photoshop" is rationalizing laziness.

Taking the last 9 challenges, 3 advanced in a row, 3 expert in a row, followed by 3 minimal, I find it interesting to note that the number of total entries for the three sets of three was advanced - 176, expert - 206, minimal - 287. I, for one, was encouraged to enter three challenges in a row: the first time I have done so in a long time.

Minimal editing is quite the opposite of laziness.

I don't mind "a" minimal or "a" expert challenge. But I really enjoy utilizing my camera AND my editing options!
