I went to Florida to meet up ja-9 to go shooting together.

My husband's mac laptop that I was borrowing didn't have space. I bought a stupid extra drive, one that could later connect to the cloud that they said would work on both the mac and then be able to copy them to my pc when I got home.

Just got home.

Plugged in the stupid drive and it changed all the dates on every one of my RAW files!!! I didn't even think that was possible!

Switched it back to the mac, and it is still all screwed up.

ALL OF MY FILES ARE SCREWED UP DATE-WISE AND CAN'T BE USED FOR CHALLENGES. It was a DPC fun trip -- and the whole purpose.

Please, please, help. Do you have any ideas? How could it do this? and no I can't get them off my card, I filled up my 32 GB over and over durring the trip.

It looks like it's still hardcoded in the metadata.

But when I view it in the finder, the created date is changing every time I plug in the stupid drive.

(can you tell I'm frustrated???)

I suppose that part's too late, and I should just be glad that the metadata is ok?

I think if the metadata is OK, then you are OK to use it for challenges. But, I don't know much.

The "file modification date" should not matter for a RAW file. Different thing for JPEGs.

Send a random image to SC and have them see if they can find the real date.

It's actually the file created date that's been changed, as well. Though when I view the metadata in bridge, the correct date is there.

Since it has been changed already, I don't suppose there's anyway to get the computer to put back the real date?

But I assume that viewing the metadata in bridge and having it show the right info, validation should be fine...?

And if so, the SC can get rid of the swearing in the forum title. :)

I would follow Lydia's advice. Give yourself some peace of mind and see if the Bear can help you out.

If it were me I wouldn't even worry. ; )

LOL Me neither :) Except that now that she's announced her problem she's pretty well ruined her chances of flying under the radar LOL

Temporarily change the date on your computer to match what you want it to be?

If this works, don't forget to change it back. Your compter will not like having the wrong date.

that might be a good idea...

I sent in a sample -- *sigh*. What a stupid thing when I was so excited to see the pictures on a real screen. Copying them off the drive now, and returning the drive tomorrow. Hopefully I can find the receipt in the trip stuff.

Don't worry about the dates the OS reports, either creation or modification (for RAW files, not for JPEGs!). The metadata is what counts.
The reason the story is different for JPEGs is that the jpeg image data can be easily modified, while the RAW data cannot.

OHHH I think it matters ;) I wouldn't enter ANY challenges that I am entering at all!

Seriously though I hope you get it all worked out and I don't think you have anything to worry about with the raw files.

She's fine, folks. She's seeing red herrings :-) The only trouble she's in, is for IMPORTING the red herrings back from Florida to Virginia, where she's planning to use them to bait herons, contrary to all the laws of the Commonwealth...

Hmmm, who knew that you were going to be taking pictures for challenges while you were on your trip? Was anyone in a long trench coat, dark glasses and a hat pulled down over their eyes lurking around when you bought the hard drive? Drives don't do this on their own, they have to have help to make changes. I'd be very suspicious of anyone and everyone that you talked before and during the trip. You can't trust anyone when it comes to the DPC challenges. You never know what lengths some will go to eliminate the competition.

I think you're right, Mike! there was someone verrrrryyyyy suspicious standing next to me when I got that drive....

And Scalvert just told me that I can bring in all the red herrings I want! The commonwealth happens to love them in the Brunswick stew! I just have to paint them green to get them by customs....

Thanks, all! Shannon says the files look fine.

Whew!! I think Ja-9 was really getting worried that I was coming back soon, to retake all the shots I couldn't use...

Stayed tuned tomorrow for the huge thanks to ja-9 thread!

Nothing ever goes right on time in Florida.

But, hey, who cares when the weather report calls for 4 inches of fresh white sand and plenty of sunny sky on an island beach?

omg that happened to me once and also I lost ALL my photos..

However, I was saved when a friend told me about this program which is a recovery program and it will recover all your pictures normally back to what it was... you can try it out to see if it works, this program saved my pictures on more than one occasion.. Just remember, that if you have reformatted, it won't bring back your pictures..

Its called Pandora Recovery...and its FREE... //download.cnet.com/Pandora-Recovery/3000-2094_4-10694796.html

Wouldn't hurt to try it on that drive... who knows it may work for you or it may not.. just a thought

I'd definitely recommend a portable drive. I just got a stupid "my cloud" drive that could then hookup to the internet from home, and I could save things onto it whenever I'm on the road.

But hotels have notoriously slow internet, so I can't see uploading them over the net to make any sense (now that I think about it), and this one takes about 4 minutes just to connect when you plug it in!

Definitely going to return this thing and buy just a portable drive. If I want clouds, I'll go seed some myself. :)

I have Western Digital products - 2 Passports and 2 WD EHD's that stay at home on my desk...it's ridiculous but it works for me...

Whenever I travel I just pack up my little Passport (1 TB) and take it with me...it's light and portable and I can ck my downloads when I'm done. I only use the WD products. I tried Cliche and like it because of the "drop" protection in it's packaging but it didn't get along with my WD on my desktop...so I returned it and got the Passport

Thanks Girls!

Yeah I have all my shots on a passport sitting here on the desk, and when I run to the tornado shelter, besides the camera I just unplug it and throw it in the tornado bag! That was what I was planning on buying to take with me, but when I read Wendy's I failed to understand her's was a "cloud" device... Sending my shots to the cloud, Well I have no idea what or where that cloud is so I ain't a gonna send pixs to it!! I like Wendy's seeding clouds!

the guy at Best Buy made it sound good...

you can upload your pictures anywhere in the world so long as you have wi-fi (ahhhhh hummm) to your "home base". After being with Wendy and experiencing her new WD Cloud device...I'll stick to my passport and transferring things to my larger desktop version quarterly...lol

I have a Passport drive too, and never had any glitches with it so far.
