Joanna's cuff was illegal, but perhaps it shouldn't be; perhaps Expert should be for composites with the Advanced rule set being a bit freer. Tools like 'content aware fill' now make what would have been 'expert' (skill level) edits part of a normal workflow. For what it's worth, I'd actually like to be able to use textures under Advanced (with a special rule) from time to time. I think better use of those little flags would help mix it up nicely.

I like this idea!

The trouble with this is it requires hands-on intervention from Langdon, which is problematical on a regular, or even semi-regular, basis...

I have long thought that the different rule sets needs modification, adjustments, and adaptation to changing circumstanmces. They should be redrawn from scratch, submitted to to Council and to the users for comment, and revised on these bases--a recursion that it would do us well to go through three or four times to maximize the chances that the users, participants, and creators would all wind up with a mutually satisfactory set of rules and policies. A board of arbitration would be prudent as well, perhaps appointed by the Site Council, that would allow more open-air proceedings wherein DQ and other such questions regarding responses to violations of terms of service are heard, recorded, made a part of the record, and kept as precedent.

Contests require clear rules. No question. But you need good rule-makers to get you set up--and the contests here have some pretty grey lines, as things stand.

Nobody is stopping you from writing one or more rule sets and posting them for comment. Be forewarned that eliminating those grey areas is harder than it seems ...

Bear, can you elaborate on what it is that requires Langdon's hands-on intervention? I wonder if there's a way that some of this stuff could be semi-automated with a little toolbox of php/JS functions.

Langdon is the only one who can actually post the challenges, make modifications to the rules or file specs, etc. SC members can review/edit the pool of potential challenge topics, but have no role in scheduling or posting them.

Or, as we say in product development, "As soon as you improve something to make it foolproof, they just improve the fool."

Hmm... I think it could be fun to take a stab at rewriting a few rule sets... At a bare minimum, it would be fun to post in the forums and see what we could come up with. Perhaps that's a thread that I best start sober...LoL... Either way, even if it's just for conversation sake, things like this are always entertaining to me. Personally, I feel like Photography at this point, has moved beyond the Advanced editing ruleset but not to expert. Expert puts you in the realm of Digital Art, which I love, but doesn't always mesh well with this site. Either way, It could be fun just to kick around some ideas...

Well my favorite suggestion so far (from the past) is that, when/ifever the rules get re-written, the name of whatever replaces the Expert Editing set be changed to Extended Editing ...

Actually, I think that's a great idea because Expert implies that you have to be just that... ...and I am NO EXPERT... Yet I have cracked the top 10 in 2 out of the last 3 Expert challenges I've entered. So I think rephrasing the name is a great start to help reduce intimidation...

Extended Editing sounds like just the thing to fill a gap between Advanced and Expert. Don't replace either, but have this as well.

mmm, egregious editing, fantastic ;-)

Expert Editing should be called "not-at-all-photography" editing. Because it's not.

At all.
