I received this comment from Shutter-For-Hire on my first ever entry. I really appreciated how he helped me with his comment. Eric also did a quick editing job to show me the difference. It was a nice way ot start with DPC.

"This is actually a REALLY great shot... i remember watching this on TV... i'm quite surprised it didn't do better!

I might make a slight suggestion... to make the image "appear" sharper than it is you can "legally" cheat... make a separate layer including just the background (do a VERY neat job of this) and do a VERY VERY tiny gaussian blur... just to make a slightly shallower DOF... EVER SO SLIGHTLY... then re-size it with the long end at 1600 (twice the max) then sharpen the layer that shows the skaters... click on "filter" - "Sharpen" - "Sharpen"... sharpen it twice... yea... too sharp... that's good for now... then re-size it to 800 on the long end, and it won't be too sharp any more... it will ne just right...

just my two cents... =)"

the comments are the joy of this place, after the astonishment of the photos. or sometimes ahead, like this one:

by tvsometime

So evocative. 8

Like the motet by Josquin des Prez (text by Virgil):

Fama malum qua non aliud velocius ullum:
Mobilitate viget viresque adquirit eundo:
Parva metu primo,
Mox sese attollit in auras
Ingrediturque solo
Et caput inter nubila condit.

Rumour is of all the pests the swiftest.
In her freedom of movement lies her power,
and she gathers strength from her going.
She begins as a small and timorous creature, and though she walks on the ground, she hides her head in the clouds.

If it wasn't for the pole and black thing, this could have been........
a very boring landscape - hehe.

Makes it an image to linger on. Get to grips with. All that deep stuff. I like it.

To show the appreciation width that one image can attract:

That looks like Huckleberry Finn and his mates getting up to mischief.

Iconic and speaks volumes of the documentation of human endevour. "The known is finite, the unknown infinite; intellectually we stand on an islet in the midst of an illimitable ocean of inexplicability. Our business in every generation is to reclaim a little more land, to add something to the extent and the solidity of our possessions." Thomas Henry Huxley - On the Reception of the Origin of Species (1887). You have done your bit ;)

Comment by Arbitrator: This photo has startled me... The girls eyes are haunted, she is a picture of pure poverty,im suspecting those teeth are real. The green mucous indicates a yukky infection, not a pleasant photo to look at for those reasons, but a brave one.

Another from K10DGuy on

As they descended into the maelstrom, into what would surely be their deaths, they clung to each other, desperately trying to take comfort in their love before the end.
As the wind and debris began to intensify, and started tearing the gondola apart, he whispered to her, "I love you, and I was wrong. We should have gone to Belize."
She whispered back, "I told you so."

an early comment I received from dwoolridge

"If images are but a bulk commodity to be quantified, ordered, and barely glimpsed, then what of the words said unto them? Attach to them no significance and give them no permanence, but let them remain ephemeral, false, and vague, as memory

Not really referring to the specific image, but the whole concept of photgraphing things casually as for DPC and the comments.

On the "you can't win" (or "you can't lose" if you're the optomistic type) front, I always like getting paired comments like these:

"Great everyday beauty. I'm not too keen on the purple tinge, but otherwise great."

"Like the purple tinge."

zeuszen is a good source for quotable comments. That last remark about tnun made me curious, so I went to look at the image.

Photographer's Notes: My daughter says they serve Daiquiris there that would make Hemmingway weep, but I digress.

comment by ubique: Well, I just like this for its nonconformity. The photograph is deliberately unfinished; nothing is certain. And that lets the viewer into it to wander around and investigate. The guys are wearing work clothes. They're not young guys. They're discussing something. No rush, though ... it's something that requires some measured consideration. As much looking as talking. Are they nurserymen, perhaps? The dog has an injured leg, and so must wear the embarrassing Elizabethan collar. But he doesn't neglect his duties, watching his master's flanks. It's a charming, mature photograph and makes some demands of the viewer. That's the best kind. 9.

I miss him, ubique, but I am glad of him.

I miss Ubique terribly.

"Beautiful, timeless. Such perfect judgement of everything, including the things excluded. If this were the cover of a book I'd be happy to buy the book without opening it, because anyone who can do this is incapable of disappointing with whatever's within."

Difficult to imagine a more complimentary comment. Beautifully written too (typically).
