Appologies, I hadn't slept for a while due to the nerves of a first entry and highly addictive nature of the 'update' button. I realise the benefits in learning what is a bad image so you can avoid those elements when aiming to make a good.

I will resist the urge to meta-vote brown attemps and grade everything on it's merrit. Heck I may just learn a few things from trying to pick the "worst" of the bunch.

DANG. I agree with Venser here.

Live and let live, folks... if someone wants to lose... let them! LOL!

What you also need to keep in mind is that some of us just plain sucked when we got here. I got a 3.8851 on my very first entry, and it was my best effort at the time. I've gotten one brown ribbon, and been in the bottom five a few times. NEVER were these conscious efforts. These "obvious attempts" at the brown may be the genuine vision of someone who is at the very base of the learning curve. Don't be so hasty to judge someone else's effort, especially since in the voting phase, you know nothing about them or their motivations. It's also possible that you just plain flat missed the message they were trying to convey.

The "worst" is relative and subjective. Some of the most highly respected and appreciated photogs on this site don't score well being judged by the masses. But they have followings of people who see and appreciate their vision.

Watch and learn.....

as the proud(?) owner of 5 browns, i can honestly say i never tried once to purposefully get the brown. there are those i knew wouldn't do well, but i never once thought "here comes the brown for this one". i think some of us just have a knack for going against the grain.

I still think most of the brown medalists made honest efforts.

To be fair, though, there definitely are those who purposely shoot for the brown, at times. Completely and unabashedly screwing the challenge, as opposed to trying to be out of the box.

The solid black square in an "orange" challenge is one of the few times you can be sure. But then again.... :D

About half of my 4.x scores were entered with me having no idea what I was doing. The rest of them I thought were pretty good. I do like the Lensbaby, but the masses don't, and those shots seem to always score low. Or they just plain suck. My one attempt at the brown, didn't even come close.

Remember that in any challenge with more than three entries there will always be a Brown ribbon winner, regardless of the quality of the entries.

As someone in contention for the most Browns I can tell you that I've never deliberately tried to make an image "bad" in order to finish last, though (as Bear_Music points out somewhere) once you're that far down in the standings it can be somewhat frustrating to finish with "Tan" or "Ecru" (seond- or third-to-last) ribbons.

And many Browns, once the crazy conditions or "non-obvious" challenge interpretation is made clear to those who didn't "get it" on their initial five-second assessment, are fine photos, if not eye candy ...

How is attempting to get the brown ribbon screwing with the challenge? The times I've tried to be out of the box it wasn't well received, so I figure I might as well make real efforts from now on.

My goal for 2013 is to get as many brown ribbons as possible without submitting monochrome entries.

for the record i only gives tens to images that i feel deserve it, if someone wants to purposely shoot for the brown, i really don't care.

A warning from Site Council:You're probably trying to be funny here, but such "scoring threats" are damaging to morale and DPC in general. Please don't do it anymore.

You're joking?
That comment is damaging to the morale of DPC and not the majority of the inane trite banter that goes on around here?

What if a person does vote along that criteria? If they are fair and consistent how does that break any of the rules? Art being subjective, you'd have a hard time convincing me there aren't people out there who don't like the general eye candy which graces the front page.

And yes, I was joking, but I'm kind of miffed that's the comment you opted for your response and not the plethora of other threads about people trying to sway how one votes and whatnot.

edit - Let me guess, someone reported the original comment.

I'm stalking everyone, reporting posts, voicing my outrage from high up on my horse. With Frisca's help I will eventually neuter these forums into such a sad, boring state that nobody will bother with them.

edit --> ;-P

Yes there is a lot of vitriol on this site, and it helps when we all try not to add to it, and rather, help avoid it. Thanks for doing your part!

No problem.

What we need are sarcasm tags for the stunted readers out there. I'm sure it'd stop a lot of confusion before it escalates to a higher level.

edit - Sorry, the original comment was obviously written in jest I don't see how someone could assume otherwise.

How many warnings are issued to those who threaten other members with words and photos before action is taken?

You're funny.
In the message you're referencing I'm thanking you for your critique and the only reason I linked to this photo was because of the comments you made in the birds challenge scores thread. The SC even acknowledged the obvious tongue in cheek reference.

Keep trying Richard, one day you'll succeed.

edit - Let me know when you report this post. At least give me fair warning.

Ahahaha, this brings back fond memories of the entire thread hahn23 spent trying to have me banned from DPC for my middle-finger photo.

ETA ... Was that entire thread hidden? I've searched and can't find it? :-(

Strikeslip, have you met Venser? Seems like the two of you would have much in common. I have noticed the same proclivities and feelings of sexual inadequacy in both of you, as evidenced by your insistence on thrusting phallic gestures at others. Maybe the two of you could meet over cocktails and tickle each others' fancy. It would be great if DPC could serve as a hook up place for you two. You could form a small self-help group.

:-)

No we haven't met, but turns out we live about 40 minutes away from each other, and we have common friends between us. Small world.
