Know mostly for his cover illustrations for The Saturday Evening Post, Norman Rockwell's style represents an idyllic vision of everyday American life. Create an image that captures that idyllic, optimistic, often humorous spirit - not necessarily a recreation of one of his paintings.

Bumping this idea.

I know that some will holler but this I feel should merit the Expert Editing style - because Norman Rockwell himself took several pictures of subjects before painting them in one composition.

Examples of Rockwell's camera work to produce the final composition.

In his painting 'The Problem We All Live With' he needed the feet position to be in perfect action of 'walking'. Here you see his models posing in the walk with bits of wood propping up the feet Models for walking stance.

Rockwell's use of props and people holding up hair & feet so he could get a the pose of a model in motion.

So after viewing these 2 great images, I am wondering if a Rockwell challenge would entail making a "Rockwellesque" image like Wendy's or to recreate a Rockwell illustration in photo.

During his life Rockwell was considered bourgeois and kitsch. After all serious artists did not do magazine covers. The fact that his stunning technique was used to create warm sweet images was enough to dismiss his work out of hand at a time when art had to have serious intent, and technique was a sign of a weak mind. Today Hans Hoffman and Barnett Newman are no longer considered the artistic ideal. After Warhol and Koons, they couldn't keep dismissing Norman. Rockwell is getting shows at serious museums and treated as a serious artist. The New Yorker art critic Peter Schjeldahl said of Rockwell in ArtNews: âRockwell is terrific. Itâs become too tedious to pretend he isnât.â

So I agree, Phffffffffffffffff Prof Thomas.

I would love this. Might even get me shooting again. I grew up loving Rockwell because my Grandma was a huge fan of his.
