Sirashley came up with such a pertinent challenge, so I though I would raise it here in case it got lost in the longer thread:

Well, please continue to keep us posted and best of luck |
For any who haven't read the forum posts, Dallas, the young son of Denielle, has suffered very serious and extensive burns and is going to be spending a considerable length of time in hospital.
I agree whole-heartedly with Ashley's suggestion, 'Courage: In honour of Dallas' is such a good idea for a challenge topic. If this challnge went ahead, it would be great if Dallas were well enough to look at the entries and pick his favourite photo - a special Dallas award on top of the three normal ribbon winners.
Alternatively a challenge with a topic entitled simply 'For Dallas', which would basically be a Free Study, but with the brief of producing a photo that would appeal to a young boy - bright, cheerful, funny etc |

This is the link to Dallas's and Denielle's caring bridge site. What a testament to love and courage in the face of adversity.

I would love to see a courage challenge or a "for Dallas" challenge.
I actually think I'd rather see a "for Dallas" challenge than courage -- with the description of "something that will appeal to a young boy". He's pretty young, and what we adults may think of as courage might not translate as well and be as interesting to him. Plus, I think you may get many more entries if people are making a gift of a photograph, instead of a challenge topic that is actually pretty challenging.
I love the idea of a courage challenge, but I think he might like the For Dallas challenge better.

I would also like to add, that I suggest it be expert editing, allowing text and anything else that could make these into posters and messages of courage and hope for Dallas.

Wendy I totally agree with you... I would personally love to see this challenge geared at cheering the little man up. Also, not having a rigid challenge description will keep the challenge light-hearted and upbeat! After all, its all about making the little guy smile... I haven't entered a challenge in months due to lack of time, but I will find a way to pencil in a 25th hour in the day if I have to to shoot for this challenge. Expert editing is also a fantastic idea! Please make this happen!!! |

that is so sweet that you all are doing so much in tribute to Dallas. he is my little soldier boy, strong willed and determined. I know he will pull through, it's just a matter of how long it will take.
I think this type of challenge would most definitely give him something to smile about and show him even more how much he's cared about. :)

Can we please do this.
To lighten the mood a little this reminds me of an old joke.
A college philosophy class was having their final exam. As the students waited nervously to see what the exam would entail, the Professor handed out the "blue books" and informed the students that the final exam which counted for half of their grade would consist of one single question. The Prof watched with glee as the frightened young men and women whinced. He then asked the all important question: "What is courage?"
As rhe young people started writing with pained looks of mental exhaustion on their faces, one young man closed his blue book only thirty seconds into the test. He then, to the surprise of the rest of the class, calmly walked up to the Prof's desk and handed in his blue book and walked out the door whistling like a man just freed from prison. The Prof, startled and shocked, opened the book to see one single two word sentence: "This is". |

This was previously a completely useless suggestion. :) See Art's post below.
However, as an alternative to my previous idea, I think I'd like to pay to get him a print of whatever he likes best from the challenge.
The idea here is that while his challenges won't let up, all of this attention will... Let's try to remember to keep a trickle of attention going their way for a while, because this is gonna be a long journey.
Anecdotally, I made this print of my friend in his car, we went out and he drove his car pretty much right after he got home from the hospital. (don't worry, we were on a back road in New Mexico). I took pictures and after editing, and printing it took a month or so to get everything done. I got this to him about a month and a half after he was out of the hospital - and it was actually something he liked pretty well, it certainly seemed to raise his spirits. I'd like to send the print about that same time for Dallas, as a booster, and a reminder of the challenge, and that we still care.
Still, a side challenge wouldn't be a bad thing, after all - if we get him to pick his favorite for a print, then we'll really know how to make the little bro smile with the next set of shots.. :)

More recently I used him for a challenge entry. :)

Good points, but too late. Doesn't mean we can't do a side challenge in a few months though. |
