Have you ever thought of how much do you spend for DPC challenges?
I tried to understand it and to tell the truth I didn't spend as much as I had thought even if this is not a cheap hobby:
8 dollars for the little cars
8 dollars for the club
12 dollars for the french fries and the kettle
8 dollars for the clothes
8 dollars for the coffee cups
25 dollars for my actors breakfast
20 dollars fir the corianders
5 dollars for the candles
8 dollars for the flower
20 dollars for the horns and the make up
2 dollars for the marbles
8 dollars for the Micky Mouse balloon
If I consider the car fuel I needed for the shots (when I went only to shoot specifically for a challenge) I spent 100 dollars.
At the end of the year the result is 230 dollars, more or less. |

Photoshop $360
Lightroom $250
NIK software $240
Topaz $160
70-200 lens $1200 (!)
10-22 lens $800
100mm macro $900
15-85 lens $800
50mm lens $100
etc etc
And before DPC I was happy with a $200 P&S!! :)
PS My new year resolution is NOT to buy any gear or software in 2012. We'll see how I go.

There was a time I smoked and drank... DPC is much much cheaper, and should I decide to quit, I am certain I could make a pretty penny selling my gear.

If I had to count this, I should add my D7000, Tamron 90mm. etc., but I'm not talking about cameras, software or lens. Those things are related to our general passion for photography. But we intentionally spend money to do shots for the challenges. Anyways, maybe Langdon has a percentage from Nikon, Canon etc.... LOL! |

Mine isn't as steep (mainly because I generally could not be bothered to set up shots.
Chalk = 5 dollars
Apples = 3 dollars
Various zoo trips = 30 dollars
And thats pretty much it.
I will say that DPC heavily influenced me to get both Photoshop and Lightroom, but there were other factors as well and I did not buy those FOR dpc.
Edit: I would be interested to know how much gyaban has spent of dpc! I bet that number is quite steep!

I'm cheaper still. I couldn't find a single challenge entry for which I have specifically bought anything. I do collect op shop stuff that might come in handy, and have used some of those bits later on. I can't count entry to swap meets and car shows etc because I was going anyway. However I have bought plug ins that I wouldn't have been aware of before DPC.

I won't count camera equipment and backdrops because I'd have bought them anyway. So here are the props I've spent money on for DPC challenges.
$8 for a bunch of tulips
$8 for a bunch of daisies
$25 for vodka (I still have the full bottle 1 1/2 years later)
$2 for plastic forks
About $15 for candy (I bought too much but couldn't remember how much I needed to fill the boxes)
$15 or more in gas to drive to this location
$4 for cheese
$10 for calla lilies
But I got 2 challenge entries out of them
$5 for dried starfish at the craft store
$7 for lilies
$6 for a teapot
$1 for an apple
$4 for Spam and $3 for eggs (I don't eat them so I never buy them)
$8 for daisies
$5 for this geode slice
$8 more flowers
$10 in pasta
I only had the potatoes at home, had to buy the broccoli, cauliflower & olives, about $7
$8 for tulips
A couple of bucks for jello
$1 for a magnifying glass
$10 for hourglass
$3 for water bottles
$8 tulips
$10 for spices
$18 for the little bottles, I bought the big bottle the year before
$10 for dumbells & $1 for the tape measure
$2 for balloons
$5 for the soccer ball
$5 for Pringles & $2 for the toy mouse |

Does it count if we returned some of the things we bought?
$30 on I can't tell you until after the science challenge ;)
$11 for the untied
$12 for the tied
$5 for some Jaw Breakers
$20 for a few bundles of steel wool
$8 for steel cable and clasps
$3 for a wisk
$15 roses for the wife
$12 for 3 clocks
and there is always the stuff i've bought in hopes I would use it in my entry and then it just failed.

+1 I don't even want to think about it, plus if my husband knew he would kill me ;) Who knew a few dollars here and there could add up to so much. |

I didn't think of it in terms of 'oh my God - how much I spent!'. It was just a curiosity. I'd spend each of those dollars (euros for me) again, even for the challenges where I didn't do well :)
Creating is what makes me alive and I must keep doing it! |
