Those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it :)

The first time comments were made anonymous

Bringing back the names for the second time around

So this would be what, the third spin of that wheel ? :) (If you want to read more, search for comments - there are about 20 pages of posts going back 2 years on basically this one issue)

If they are anonymous, people will just respond to the comments in the forums.

I have never recieved one comment that I thought was malice or rude....even on my crappiest of shots, (and I have LOTS) I have found people to be very courtiuous and informitive in what I have done right or wrong.

I just enjoy the comments when they come in, positive and negative, and really enjoy seeing who makes the comments. I think its one of the coolest things on the site.

I tend to only leave positive comments, unless I think a photo is absolutely shocking, then I may add something but not as a personal attack, which it sounds like can happen here.

In some cases where I've not seen if something fits the challenge I have said so, and rather than abuse back the person has pointed out something to me I missed and I have revoted accordingly.

However, there will also the the people with a tiny brain and huge ego who take things personally and can't handle even the smallest bit of critism. Often I think, and it is just a feeling, it is the new people here (no offence to most new people, we were all there once, just the odd clueless one), who don't realise that the world does not revolve around everyone liking the latest out of focus snap of the cat sniffing the flower done in ascii text and taken as a snap of your computer monitor (or something). Hopefully in time they learn, and often grow up a little.

I tend to find them quite amusing often. One guy last week when I dared *shock horror* to say I didn't like his image much, which I since noticed has been disqualified for some doubtless valid reason, came back with a comment that I shouldn't comment on his photos as he didn't comment on my one I posted in a forum (see thumbnail). I had to point out to him the "photo" in question was actually an Excel graph of results I had put up *laugh*

It seems like there's a healthy percentage both for and against anonymity during voting.
So maybe a suitable compromise would be to have a personal setting, which you can set if you want your comments made anonymous during voting and to only be made public after voting has completed.
Also, consider a setting for those that don't want comments on their photos (so as to not bruise their egos, if others don't like their work as much as they do ;)

By the way - I've currently got 22 comments on my Free Study entry, and the most helpful suggestion for improvement came from Pitsaman.
And I must admit, I totally agreed with your comment - so many thanks for making it.

How do you expect to keep people whipped up into an emotional frenzy if you go around offering practical suggestions?

There will still be plenty of room for that.
Imagine all the forum posts, where people call others "cowards" for making their comments anonymous - LOL :)

I think it's important that we're all accountable for what we say when we leave comments, so I think our names should definitely be associated with the comments. However, if the photo submissions can remain anonymous during voting, maybe we should have the commenters' names remain anonymous during voting. Once the challenge is over the names should appear both the commentors and the photographers. I'd be in favor of something like that.

It's not like it'll get implemented - so no reason to worry!

...

and a lot of people responded to 'incorrect' comments in the forums instead, further removing any pretence at being anonymous.

I think that if you write a comment critiquing a photograph then you should absolutely, with out a doubt, sign your name to it. How cowardly to want to make comments and then not stand behind them. This is intended to be an educational, interactive experience. If you don't have the courage to sign your name, don't make the comment. Is the fear that you might not be able to back up your comment. When I critique a photo and make an observation about something I don't like, I say why it doesn't work and offer my suggestion to improve it. If comments aren't specific, they are useless.
