1st challenge in a few months. I was getting discouraged, so I stepped back, regrouped, revisited some of my lewssons and now this:

| Wow everyone is all of sudden getting hit hard. I went from 6.6 to 5.9 in just 4 hours. Someone got up on the wrong side of bed. Well at least the early voters were very nice to me. Thank you. |

| I think the grump Free Study voters are confused and voting on my Recipe entry instead. That thing is dropping like a rock and my FS is hanging tough at a score that is way too high. |

Pulling a 6+ is a freestudy is VERY good. A 6+ is generally considered doing well, and freestudies tend to get voted more harshly by many folks.

For a first entry, in a Free Study, that's not too shabby. You must offer what the voters like. Or, you're a really good photographer. Free Studies have some of the toughest voting. |

welcome anthony. i've had many free study entries and never cracked 5.3, so i would say a 6 out of the gate is fantastic. good luck, the week takes many bumps and turns and highs and lows, be prepared
having said that...this is a true anomoly for me in a FS, hope it holds

It is!
People tend to vote higher in non-free study challenges I think because there is a description of what your entry should contain. In contrast, free studies can draw from any facet of life and photography, so the photograph must stand on the merits of its own quality. I've no idea if that is why voting is tougher with them, but it's how I've always thought of free studies and its voting.
As Steve said, 6 is a benchmark for a good image. And it's harder to get in free studies, so keep doing what you're doing.
Now, staying above 6 is harder still :-) So best of luck to you! And don't forget to vote and leave comments!

One of my last shots with my 300 2.8l. I will miss you grealy, but the new 500mm was worth the trade in.

The only reason I entered this shot is because I accidentally got covered in poison oak from head to toe in the process of taking it, and gosh dang it, I wasn't going to just let the image rot in archives after paying such a heavy price.
So not worth it. |
