I would like to encourage the powers that be to continue the concept that DPC is a mutual mentor society (term courtsey of posthumous). These past few weeks were quite fun, and via an extraordinary amount of comments, I had the unique experience to discover how many see the photographs I put forth. The "in the style of" theme benefits all who participate, including the photographer of the moment.
With that in mind, I would love to see a semi-recurring challenge (two week submission phase) based on a member's vision/style/process/etc. The last person "studied" will have the challenge (not easy!), and pleasure, of paying it forward by choosing the next member. So, with another thank you to vlado, I put forth melethia.
I chose Deb based on the depth of her portfolio; fine examples, both BW and Color, of street photography and life as a whole. She has an uncanny ability to connect with her subjects, rendering a comfortable candid, telling us something about the person. She is more than just street, and I'll leave it to others to voice what Deb brings to her images that enchants their own sensibilities.
Suggestion:
Mutual Mentor Society: Melethia
Members challenge, advanced rule set
Description: DPC is a mutual mentor society. Take the time to study melethia's portfolio as a whole, this should also include her past comments. Learn what you can and put forth a photograph inspired by her style. Remember, style is loosely defined and can represent vision, passion, technical choices, post-processing, etc. You have two weeks to grow as a photographer.

Nice idea and a great person to start with. Now how can I get a pigeon to ride a bicycle...?

Great suggestion, and what a great place to start with Melethia.
Inspiration from Deb's photos is one of the reasons I took up, and stuck with street photography in the first place. |

She was one of my earliest inspirations here -- specifically as part of the duo that was Melethia and pawdrix (God rest his DPC profile). Their styles, personalities, and attitudes complemented each other nicely. Deb was often a good antidote to Steve's bluntness.
As far as her work, Deb's images are nothing if not honest. She's full of humility. No false pretense, no private agenda. We need more of that around here. Great idea, Ben.

Ha! You wait, Ben... I know where to find you - sorta - and you are SO dead....
I'd not enter if we did this, for fear I'd end up in the bottom half of my own "in the style of" challenge! Seriously. But you know, that would actually be very much my style to do that (says the woman with a sub-5 running in patterns.)
Unfortunately, I'm not sure I really have a style anymore. Lost my mojo about two years ago as far as DPC is concerned, but I still enjoy taking snapshots. DPC may not enjoy snapshots, but it is a valid skill to have - the ability to take a decent snapshot. Comes in handy on vacation and at office functions (where everyone always asks "are you bringing your camera?")

Yay Deb! I love Deb to pieces! I was so happy to actually meet her. She's been an inspiration to me for many years now. |

Now, that's a good idea! I remember coercing Deb into buying her ultrawide, on a Cape Cod visit many years ago ΓΆ€” and look at her now :-)
I like this whole idea a lot, but it's safe for me to like it because nobody in their right mind would ever propose emulating MY style (or lack of same) :-)

Deb, I can't agree with your statement that you have lost your mojo - look at your last entry please.
You have inspired me so many times and I have asked your advice as well, cheeky of me given that I hardly know you I might add .. and that is something I rarely do .. there is less than a handful of ppl I ask.
I would be just as nervous entering a challenge trying to shoot in your style as I was Ben's because you are as unique plus I just haven't developed the eye for street shots ... yet .. I try to frame a pretty shot and miss the story.
I so hope this challenge goes forth .... I don't care what I score. It would just be so great to try.

Heck, I'd have to go find a street. There aren't any cobbles in Los Angeles, though. And concrete just ain't the same, you know? (Check out that jagar guy! Talk about making good use of streets and cobbles!) |

Ben read my mind.
Deb's photos have heart. She is master of the candid, disarmingly real but usually optimistic. A rare combination. |

Deb's photos embrace almost the entire gamut of what I hold photographically dear. (She just hasn't recognized herself yet back in the states). (But I have). |

It'd certainly be a challenge to try to shoot in someone else's style periodically. Sounds good to me! +1 from me.

what a wonderful experience i had with ben's challenge, studying his portfolio and keeping an eye out for opportunities to shoot in his style; i think this is an incredible idea to help the site grow through exploring the portfolios of different members and seeing through their eyes. deb is an excellent choice to continue with. +1 |
