Hmm... I flushed a giant black spider this morning. Silly me. I didn't realize there was a bug challenge. |

Hmmm... Me and my puny 1:1 macro may have to try VERY hard to win... ;) lol!
Thank goodness it's winter down under, but even so - Roz is to be feared.. :) |

Well you could try this:
That will get you 2.88x. See this chart:

Shockingly this cludge was producing about 3-4x at the max magnification... I've not tried it again since I rigged the aperture to work... Wide open it was nearly impossible to get anything bigger than a bacterium in focus...
Granted my measurement system was shooting a screen door then measuring the FOV and calculating it out..
The sharpness just wasn't ever really what I wanted - I really should get it back out and play with it sometime.

I suspect you will be *much* happier with the sharpness with it stopped down... but the viewfinder is going to be *really* dark unless you can focus, then stop down. That beast must have had a relatively short focal length to start with to get that kind of magnification out of it.. what was it in it's original life?

It's the Sigma 24-70 that's listed on my profile... Plus the reverse mount that I did added a bit of length, so it's kinda like a reverse mounted lens with a very short extension tube built in.. :)
The blasted thing died one day, and I just put it in a drawer.. Two or three years later I dug it out and hacked it up to create this thing - I expect you're right about the sharpness too, it should be MUCH better stopped down a bit. |

I vote we have this challenge again in 6 months time.
I have been bug hunting and have come to the conclusion that it is just too cold and wet for any insects to be out and about, except the mossies but even they have gone a bit camera shy.

You have a 50 1.8. Flip it around backwards, hand hold it in front of the camera.
Excuses=gone. :) |

So is that with another lens also attached? |

I'm guessing that it was just the 50mm... Try this with an even wider lens and marvel at the results! :) |

So after reading this I want to try to take some macro shots with an improvised reversed lens. This is an old 35-80 kit lens that came on my film Rebel. I have not used it in years and when I did try to use it last it makes a grinding noise when auto focusing.
I have taken a body cap and drilled out the middle and plan on gluing a UV filter to this so that I can screw the lens into the filter to attach it to the camera.
Has anyone done this? If so, can you recommend the glue that you used that is strong enough to hold the weight of the lens?
Also, should I keep the glass on the UV filter or try to knock it out? If the glass should go does anyone know how hard it will be to get it all off of the filter? |

Sounds like a great re-use for this lens. Use epoxy to bond the UV filter to the body cap; make sure the surfaces are clean. You can rough them up with scotch brite for an even bond.Wipe with alcohol to do a final cleaning and to remove any dust from roughening. Removing the glass would be a good idea. It should not be hard to get all the glass out of the filter, though you might have to pick the individual pieces out of the frame. You could also just bond the lens directly to the body cap, eliminating the filter. |

Someone else just got an MP-E65. The 100mm Macro with extension tubes just wasn't cutting it. Muahahahaha! ;)
So of course I shot a zillion awesome bug photos on the 4th, well outside the time limit.
That's how I roll. |

Congrats on the lens Peter. Is that lens as difficult to use as I've read? |

It's not easy.
I have the muscle memory that allows me to center tiny objects on a lens, learned from using extension tubes to hunt (very active) bees and flies for years, so I was prepared for it. I don't use a tripod, and I've been shooting over 4X at F16 without too much trouble, but I'm using the MT-24EX flash as a bit of a crutch. It both allows a reasonable DOF and tends to freeze any hand shake.
But without that practice... oh man. It would be beastly to use. You'd have to push through a lot of frustration, and not give up. For example, when I shoot landscape I'm really quick. But rotate the camera to portrait and suddenly it's 10 times harder for me to frame a shot, because I DON'T have as much practice... my body doesn't know where to sit, and I have to hunt around in a sea of blur. It's still fun, but oof.
Despite the difficulty, the lens is a TRIP. My backyard now feels like an entire continent. :)
I'd link to some examples on Flickr, but I forget if people disapprove of links they could follow to dig around for challenge entries. Are outtakes gauche these days? :) |

Most of P&S is sharp enough for bug micro. Zero cost to diffuse P&S flash Film Container |

Nope, just the body and then holding the lens out in front, uncoupled and all :)
No excuses. |

So your backyard continent is replaced by a regional universe? Good luck with your entry. I got a killer shot 2 feet from my back door...

Haha, mine was shot about 10' from the door of my workplace. Basically the first thing I took a picture of before wandering off to shoot some flowers.
Bugs are never very far away.

You can get a step-up ring and magifying filters...in my case a 1x, 2x, 4x, and 10x. The 4x is the most used one, though I have got pretty good results with it coupled to the 10x too...here's an example.
Ok, so nobody will mistake it for roz but it got lots of decent detail on a pretty tiny bug, so I'm happy with it.
