Do photos have a better appearance with a border?
03/24/2004 01:14:58 PM · #2
What do you think ?
03/24/2004 02:22:35 PM · #3
It depends on 3 things:

The Photo
The Border
The Person's Taste

So there is no answer really :)

Right, but can someone answer this? How do you create a border? I use Photoshop Elements 2.0 and haven't found a way fo adding a border. is this something you can onyl do in the full version of photoshop?

konador
I sometimes prefer art work without borders, less contrived,
looser, not always.
I have just clicked on your website {konador] and cant believe it,
I'm totally obsessed with sheep, have been using henry moore;s images
and think i may have used one of yours.
my art is here, if youre interested

go to image>canvas size and increase it 105% in all directions. this gives you space for a border. since that is all i can remember, try going here, where i read it and there are other border ideas too.tutorial

*edit to fix link

bestagents,

thanks!

In Elements, I usually frame like this; select the entire image, go to Edit > Stroke, select white (typically) and surround the image with about 5 pixels of white. Then, go to image>resize>canvas and expand the height and width by something like .2 inch. If your background color is black, you will now have a black frame around the thin white line. Of course, you can select any colors which are most appropriate for your image, but it's hard to go wrong with black and white.

Theres some really great art in that gallery Lesley :) I really like 'submerged'

The more intricate the border/frame the more it takes away from the picture itself.

Thank you Ben, I used to paint every day on canvas now I spend too
much time on photoshop, rank begginer with digital art but have been
selling, cant figure.
I agree with faidoi about the intricate border distracting art.

That's what I would have said.

I must add though, that when I'm done a picture, it's very clear to me whether it needs a border or not. For example: This one,
evidently needs one because the subject is undefined.

I dont really mind, but then I'm an easygoing person really, but it would be nice to get some photo-credit on the website and a link to my prints site so people know the photo is mine :) I stongly suggest in the future that you ask people's permission first, as some people would be very mad about you using a variation of their photo and selling it for a lot of money. They could even take legal action I expect. I'm fine with it if I get credit but lot's of people wouldn't be... just a small word of warning.

Nice pic by the way :)

I am not so sure how easy going I would be when that is being sold for $456, and the base image for it is $25 for your print, Ben. Can you say COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT.
03/25/2004 04:36:59 AM · #17
Ben (Konador) might be easy going but I am surprised that you think it's OK to steal someone's work and then incorporate such substantial amounts of it in your own work which is for sale.

I have to say that if I were Ben I would NOT be so understanding.
03/25/2004 05:18:15 AM · #18
ok have taken it off, sorry
03/25/2004 05:25:59 AM · #19
sorry about that, never thought of copyrights, i havent actually
got the work, its just an image and i was going to give you royalties
should anyone want to buy. wont happen again.

Good for you, Lesley, I think it's the right thing to do until you contact Ben and discuss copright/ purchasing rights etc.

Best of luck...

Yes. Here, here. May save you large headaches later.
By the way I have a general copyright statement (can't remember where I found it) Here, that gives the basics of copyrights.

an important part..."nor any portion thereof, including text, graphics, images or other materials may be copied, re-transmitted, manipulated, reproduced, used or altered in any way by digitizing, synthesizing or combining in any way by use of a computer or other electronic means or method now known or developed in the future, without the express written permission of the copyright holder, except that you may download one copy of such materials to your individual computer for your personal, non-commercial use only, provided that all copyright and other proprietary notices appearing on such material are preserved without alteration, modification or obfuscation."
