PS What I would be worried about is that I would start taking photos just aiming at getting published even if they were the photos I don;t like taking. Same as here at DPC take photos because they score but not those I like taking. If you know what I mean.

Yes, usually a good sign but my seascape was in for 5 before rejection! | |

If I was the betting type I would've bet that shot would've made it through. That site confuses me a lot of the time. |

I had one one time that was accepted in I think less than an hour. It was a lizard, and I was so shocked. I had just submitted it, and I was still on my profile page, and I got that congratulations message. I thought it must have been a gliche in their system, but I ran with it anyway :)

What an inspiring thread, spanning over a period of a year. One can learn a lot from rejections. What inspires me the most about this is that even after many rejections, you guys never give up trying. |

"Your picture has been evaluated both by the site crew and the members. The common decision was to not publish.
Comments from members during screening
* contemplation and Natural"
This was after 6 days of waiting. Not much of a comment. But never mind, I will keep on trying.

1x.com is changing some time today, and their photo critique process is changing, too. It's quite onerous. Critiques of others' photos in the forums must be on-message, in-depth, and relevant. Failure to be so may result in the user being banned from critiquing, and persistent failure to follow these rules may result in a permanent ban from 1x.com. I think that's a fantastic development. |

This is given as an example of an unacceptable critique:
"Very nice, very clear, and very normal. I don't know how I combined these adjectives but that's what I feel when looking at your photograph. Maybe it means a lot to you as you said, but to the viewer because we don't know what the people are doing exactly, we kind of feel out of the photograph. Thanks though, very nice."
This is the rationale for why it's not acceptable:
"This is a statement, not critique. Critique analyzes, interprets and evaluates, answering the questions of How?, Why? and How Well? Critique does not automatically mean you must come up with negatives. Your reaction may be positive, negative or a combination of both. The important thing about Critique is that you EXPLAIN why you are responding to the particular picture in a certain way!"
This is confusing me. I mean, I understand that comments such as "Nice picture!" and "Reminds me of my grandmother's house in midsummer! Thumbs up!" are not in any way critiques, that they are statements and/or reactions ΓΆ€” I can understand the desire to eliminate comments of that nature and foster meaningful critique. But if the above quoted critique/statement is not considered meaningful, aren't they drawing the line really, really close to the bone? Is it really true that EVERY meaningful critique of an image has to include breaking down the image into specifics and analyzing those specifics?
There's not a lot of people that can do that well... I donno...

Yeh, not only do they reject my photos but a comment I made was deleted :-(
''Overall I find this image just too busy and the background to the right is distracting.''
It was how I felt but obviously not what they wanted so :-P to them !

+1 and I will add:
I got a message the other day saying my critiques were not long enough. While it wasn't several paragraphs long, it wasn't just a sentence saying, "Wow! great photo!" I always try to include several sentences of what I like and what I don't like and then include anything I would improve. If they are going to get that picky with their critiques then they may not have many people left to critique photos. I know I haven't done any since, I have been afraid to. |

I spent a lot of time on there yesterday and viewed a lot of photos, some are outstanding, some are good and some are (to me) average.

The requirements are onerous, I agree. The people posting critique will really have to think, really have to decompose each image subject to critique (the forum is strictly for the critique of photos posted for the purpose). One will really have to know what one is talking about. |

Del, I'm surprised 1X didn't publish your shot. I sometimes wonder if paying members get more images published. |

I'm not a huge fan of 1x but I like this idea. Letting people know what a critique is supposed to be about is a great step forward. Empty phrases take up much of the comment space under too many images on the net. Just saying you notice something is not a critique unless it is followed by a judgment and a rational. Having a comment like " the first thing I noticed was the borders and the lighting" well....and? good ? bad? loved it? hated it? why?
Saying whether one likes or dislike the subject matter is not a comment, it is a random observation about oneself and while we all love talking about ourselves, one should try to limit the comments to comments on the photograph under discussion.
If 1x is going to try to be the best on the net, then they should raise the bar for comments as well |

C'est la vie; if I didn't make the cut I can live with it. However, it would be nice to have even a simple comment so I can decide if it's worth trying to improve and resubmit. Feels a little like they're saying "you can't play in our sandbox and we aren't going to tell you why" :-) |

that was discussed many times in their forums. The number of submissions is so big nowadays (hundreds per day, apparently, and only ~20 are accepted), they don't have time and manpower to write any comments on rejected entries, screeners are not paid for their efforts, ASAIK. I know it can be frustrating, but that's a standard practice in all juried competitions (that's what it is, really).
I looked at the new site and I can't decide whether I like it or not. Look too much like Facebook or Flickr to me... very busy with all kinds of buttons and menus. But better photos :) Maybe I'll get used to it eventually... |

At least it seems faster. The slickness of the black was one of its features. Not sure about this version. |
