So I get that the site changed...but is it possible it could be an April Fools Joke? I mean, it seems like way too much effort to go through for that, but the timing is curious

I doubt it, they've had 01/4/2011 as their main image for a while before today. Long way to go and a lot of work for an April Fools joke.

Wishful thinking. The site looks like Facebook's poor cousin. A lot of functionality does not work. I cannot upload any images.

At least it seems faster. The slickness of the black was one of its features. Not sure about this version.

Yes, I liked the black.

Me, too. I guess they got tired of hearing how "dark" 1x appears to some folks.

OY! That's ugly! They took a wonderful silk purse of graphic presence and turned it into a sow's ear :-(

Got to say, the white sure hurts my eyes.
Personally I always liked the black and never thought it looked like a "dungeon"
I wonder if people who complained about the black are now also the most vocal about the white. It would figure.

Also, that stupid rotating image thing on the front page makes Safari on OSX jump around. They obviously didn't test the site out on a Mac properly. Plus, the images advertising the print service look like Ikea ads. :-/

I might have to give up on 1x after all. The usability is awful. When I try to check images currently being "selected" an image from the front page come up first and I really dislike their current front page image. I will ask for refund and look again at what I want to do overall. I am lost at the moment.
PS The new site also says:
"It can take up to several weeks for a decision to be made depending on the workload of the curator team."
They seem to have changed terminology completely. What was wrong with screeners and 7 days max? Publish and not Select?

Good luck asking a member-driven website for a refund.

It looks like they got some venture capital funding and the "commercial" approach that goes with it? Otherwise why use a Facebook social networking model?
And the photos do look much better on black background. I prefer text-based pages on white though. They are easier to read.

They've always been very Firefox biased over there. Behaving OK on my Mac with Safari.

They do look like Ikea ads.

I signed up to sell prints on a few images, but they haven't appeared yet. It says something about "signing" an agreement. Not sure if they mean digitally or physically. I read and agreed to the terms, but haven't seen a confirmation or a request to physically sign anything yet.

lots of bugs so far. for example, can't upload an image for screening from my Mac/Firefox... and re Ikea ads... it is not that surprising if you recall tat the owners are from Sweden :)

I think April Fool's Day is a US convention. 1x is not a US site, so chances are the changes are there to stay. I haven't looked yet. Looked yesterday for the first time in AGES (can't remember why) but was delighted to see one of Zigomar's shots in the random row!

The site looks very fresh and modern now, I'm not sure about the plain white background for displaying photos (although there is a button to switch to black background below each photo). I guess the change was initiated by the prints sale option.

I'm really trying to not sound like I'm ranting I'm really Ok without the 1X publication and without the comments even. :-)

However, the "too many images" excuse doesn't hold water with me. I assume they have make a reasoned decision and then click a button to accept or reject an image now. If that's true then just exapand the screener's selection to a hand full of choices (<10) that would give a minimum of feedback to the submitters in the same time it takes to vet a selection now.

Something like this:

Completely agree with this. It was slow to load previously but man is it an eye-sore...I definitely don't like the white background.

Oh yeah...not-selected :)

Saw that myself, not sure I like it either, I'm very used to the black look and I think the white look has made it seem a bit more commercial (that and the selling prints), I feel I may lose interest as it seems to have lost a touch of its mystique!

On the image pages, you can toggle the background to black. Just below the lower right corner of the the image is a circle that is split diagonally, half dark, half light.

Click on it and the bg goes to black. However, it does not reverse the text on the page, so essentially, everything but the image disappears.

Where are the overall stats? Image views and what not, can you know how many likes you have? Site is too white for me, I don't go there often anymore anyway but my photos there get so many views it is always nice to check in on them.

I have decided that my wishful thinking is that the site revamp is not a joke, but that the colorscheme is the April Fools, so that tomorrow that will be black again. As said, wishful thinking ;-)

With that kind of "color scheme" I even consider joining back... I HATE the dungeons colors!

April Fool's originated in England, known in 14th century France, and known all over Europe ever since.
PS Unfortunately I don't think 1x revamp was April's Fool's joke. Pity.
