Getting quite a few comments which shows interest but unfortunately it is not fully reflected in the score, although over 6 is nothing to complain about.

I knew I took a chance with my entry but I like it well enough that I'm having it printed large on canvas.

I really like this entry but the voting reaction is "eh"
I blame my wife since she convinced me that this was the one to enter.

One thing that stands out for me in this challenge is that the vast majority of flight photos are of big, slow waterfowl, and very few of small woods-edge song birds, which tend to be much smaller (6" vs. 6'), much faster and much more unpredictable in their movements. Also, there's lots less light for birds in woods vs. in the open. I wonder how much people are taking this degree of difficulty into consideration when voting? Any thoughts about how we should handicap these efforts? |

Degree of difficulty doesn't make the image better or worse. What matters is the final product and not how you got there.

The challenge was good for me...I learned a lot. I went out today and shot birds again...I could definitely see improvement. I did not expect my score to be high, I was expecting it to be average and I'm on target.

IMO I think people should shoot based on the level of their experience. |

Small birds in flight present a challenge that is quite difficult to overcome. You have to be right up on them (probably 10 or 12' away) or closer even with a really long lens (>300mm) to get the bird to be large enough in the frame to keep from having to crop away most of the image. If you want to make THAT your personal challenge, there is nothing wrong with it. Larger birds lend themselves naturally to helping you create a photo for a challenge like this one though. If you manage to pull off an outstanding photo of a small bird, your score will reflect it for sure. If your image of that small bird is mediocre, the score will be as well. The voter isn't often gonna give extra credit for a failed attempt at a difficult shot. They will, however, reward you for a successful attempt.

I get what you are saying, but I like to crawl before I walk. As a newbie to shooting birds I would like to get the hang of it first. Once i become comfortable I would start challenging myself with the more difficult birds. Also, not everyone has big lenses. I have a 300 mm which is pretty good. My 80 - 400 does not focus fast enough so I can not use it on the birds. |

Informative responses. Thanks.
My understanding is, then, that basic editing rules favor brighter conditions, which is where bigger-slower birds fly, and that selective editing rules favor smaller, faster birds in darker conditions, if such a challenge were to be held.
I learned from dpc, too, and went out and got a better photo of my bird, yesterday. I used selective editing techniques and produced what is one of my most pleasing (to me) bird in flight photos ever. Good on'ya dpc. |

There is nothing shameful about posting a low score, just chalk this challenge up to a learning experience. ;) |

If that's the case, then you should probably be shooting larger slower-moving birds :) Either that or I completely misunderstood your original post... I got the impression that you might have been shooting smaller faster birds and having a difficult time with it due to your comments about 'handicapping' the extra efforts required to make those photos...
