Have we ever had a Musicians challenge? I know many of you are also talented in the music arena & there are great shots in the music gallery. I think it would be fun. Any thoughts? |

I second this motion, and if it wasn't redundant, I'd third it, fourth it and fifth is too. |

I did look through a couple of the sound challenges and there are a number of instruments. I also peeked at the various song title challenges & band name challenge & tools of the trade challenge - lots more instruments, not as many actual players. I think it would be important to include the person making the music. |

I have photographed musicians a lot. REO Speedwagon, Styx, Phil Vassar, individual members of Slipknot to name a few. Nothing is better than capturing that raw emotion on the faces and they way the instruments are played/handled. Most...ok...all large concert venues do not allow anything more than a point and shoot unless you know someone or have a press pass. SO then you go to a small venue, the lighting usually sucks, so you have to be on your "A" game, squeezing off shots at the right time. I would love to have this be a challenge.

= LUCKY! With competition (and subject matters) like that, I wouldn't even rate against you in a challenge!
However, I don't think the musicians would have to be professionals, or captured during a performance. Every city has street musicians somewhere and jam sessions sometimes have more honest emotions than performances. You could even take a picture of a conductor or church organist (some churches have great architecture as a background). The one thing I think would be important is to be able to know what kind of musician they are. You could take a picture of a rocker with crazy hair and tattoos, but without drumsticks or a guitar, it's just another random person. |

I have been fortunate, but any of us on DPC could do this challenge very well. Some of the best musician photos I have seen have been from small clubs with good lighting, and relatively unknown performers. Plus, the smaller local bands appreciate someone getting shots of them playing. I was shooting a Styx concert, and usually you get three songs to shoot. I went past, shooting into the 4th song, and got some dirty looks from Tommy Shaw. So I stopped there. Tattoos and small clubs with good lighting are my favorite settings. |
