Hi. I was wondering if anyone could take a hit at editing this photo. This is straight from the camera, with only a minor adjustment to the cropping angle. It was taken during my trip to Freiburg, Germany and I absolutely love the composition. I've come up with an edit I like, but I'd like to see others' take on this.
Thanks a bunch.

I like the image, but it felt a little sterile to me. So I edited it to give it some "old world" feel and some nostalgia. Ran it through both Topaz and SEP, the erased back just the bit over the flowers to give it a touch of color. |

I actually like the straightforward and direct composition. I think to really make this jump, I would edit the shot to emphasize the lines throughout, the recurring rectangular shapes. While I tried a 'topazed' edit to really pop the colors, I like b/w better here personally.
Here is my quick attempt using a preset I created this weekend. After using it, I did a little dodge and burn to pull out the text.
It is funny - Steve's ( Yospiff) edit was very similar to the other I came up with, including the vignette - but his crop was better. Partial desaturation or increase in b/w feel, whatever you want to call it, it another nice way to go.

This is a shot that lends itself well to a lot of different treatments. I tried a few different things with it, but finally settled on a partially desaturated look. (Well comparing it to the OOTC shot, it's not desaturated, but it is compared to my first treatment of it.)

I'm working on my own personal restraint with editing, so my intent here was to "keep it real". Look ma' no Topaz! I just read a little more about how Vibrance works the other day, so that was another thing I wanted to try. The subtle colors of the building were perfect for that experiment.
Afterthought: So, after posting this my itch to Topaz got a hold of me again. While playing I noticed the street popped on one of the presets. I went back out of Topaz (twitch, twitch) and burned the street.
Photoshop CS5
Levels - Just picked blacks and whites with the black and white eyedroppers
Vibrance - Pushed slider all the way to the right
Vibrance again - Pushed slider about half way up
Crop - Because the partial sign on the right side bothered me
Brightness/Contrast - Slight contrast boost
Selective Color - Boosted blacks a tad
Dodge - Dodged the shutters
Burn - Burned the road stones

Nice photo to play with. It definitely does have a lot of potential for different editing styles.
I went bright and happy with my rendition. I went dark with a photo earlier today, and didn't want to make myself depressed :)
Here is my edit:
* Straightened
* Topaz Adjust - exposure and colors mainly
* Increased black point
* Increased Definition
* Decreased Saturation but increased Vibrancy
* S-curve |

Out of all the edits proposed so far, Spiffy's strike me the most. |

Thanks everyone. I made an attempt before posting (didn't save it). I did apply a bit of everyone's attempt, but I never tried anything except color. What more, I was impressed with the vignette and I often forget about that effect. Thanks for that.
Finally, I used my Tamron 28-75 and I was surprised to see the amount of distortion easily corrected and I forget that is allowed in advanced editing.
Thanks again for the edits everyone. When I get some free time I'll have to try my original again.

Thanks. I loved the way this restaurant looked. Its located on Oberlinden in Freiburg, Germany. Most restaurants have outdoor seating, but when I walked around they were usually quite busy. Night shots are fantastic.

Processed in ACR, flat and soft, exported to CS3, lens distortion corrected, HDR Efex Pro for color and structure, then Silver Efex Pro in a luminance layer for overall tonality and density, gradients all 4 edges. Adamus sharpening.

Well..I finally got some free time..plus I bought the topaz bundle and decided to fool around with it.
Anyway, thanks again for all the advice. Here is my quick edit. I decided a tighter, more symmetrical crop. Perhaps, I'll fool around with topaz a bit more and come up with other options, but this is certainly better than the original. :)
I'm actually heading back there in May (most likely)..I'll have to try that restaurant out.

I had a go at editing it for fun.
I chose the crop to the top of the patterns.
I also darkened the windows cause I thought it made it interesting.
Darkened the name too cause it made it pop out more.
I'm not very happy with the colour of the flowers.
