Let me clear this up and put an end to this argument. I do believe that many Americans are arrogant, particularly when they are traveling in other countries. However, my statement was about "westerners" not "Americans". The discussion was in the context of people traveling to other countries for sporting events and being subject to that country's laws. I was operating within that context. Also, I was in no way suggesting that the news article was talking only about Americans (hence the use of "westerner") and I was in no way directing my statement at Jac. The "you" in my sentence was supposed to refer back to "people" but it would have been clearer to use "they" instead of "you" so I apologize for that confusion. At any rate, my use of quotations should have made it clear that "our country" was what the "arrogant westerner" might say and not what I myself was saying. In other words, the quoted section was merely hypothetical. |

No, Robert, not in other words, or ANY words. I was explaining what my take on it was based on previous discussions about this very type of topic. Do not do to me the very thing you're accusing me of, do not tell me what I mean, and for that matter, take your whole attitude about assuming I mean the worst and put a sock in it.It isn't on topic, and it's at least tiring, and not just a little offensive.

Prop 8 ruled unconstitutional, DNDT repealed, and now this. Gay rights are undeniably evolving.

Umm....
If, like I am, one is an adopted child, then the terms "mother" and "father" aren't technically correct, are they?

A "mother" is the female person and a "father" is the male person who raised you. I have 2 adopted boys and I am their father (along with my wife being their mother). |

And a "parent" is the adult who raised you, regardless of their gender. For the purpose of a passport application, the gender of the parent(s) is irrelevant. |

Fixed it, despite the syntactical awkwardness.
I have a friend, with straight parents, who has two mothers. An adoptive mother, and a birth mother.
I hope you weren't suggesting by your overly restrictive definition that one of them is mistaken. |

Does your friend see their adoptive mother and birth mother in the same category?
Who did they goto when they had scary dreams?
Who did they turn to when they were sad or hungry?
Isn't that who mommy is?
Of course, we always honor our boy's birth mothers and include them in our prayers. It takes a very special woman to give her child up for adoption rather than using other methods. |

I does mean that "mothers AND fathers" -- exactly one of each -- are not required to form a family unit. (Although the phrasing of the comment, with both stated in the plural, also suggests some sort of plural marriage -clearly not necessary)
You can have a valid family with one mother, one father, two mothers, two fathers, or one of each (here not even considering extended families such as are common in many cultures) ...

I think it was Adolf Hitler who first said it. He thought the State was better qualified, not much different than many liberals in America believe today :(

No more than you did on 'liberals'. Or are you the only one that gets to make over the top statements about groups of people?
