Hey!! I can still shoot seagulls!

This one did receive a posthumous blue... :D

Thanks langdon, a superb choice for a challenge.

This is a wonderful opportunity to submit a photo you love, but can't explain why, instead of a photo you think others will give a high mark. Maybe add a touch of poetry for good measure...

I've been struggling for 15 minutes to say what pointandshoot just said in one line. That's it, exactly. It's like a free study from the heart with no guardrails.

I'm all in favor of poetry. I believe Don is too :-)

The fact that we need a challenge like this in order to put out works that are different from the usual Free Study speaks volumes. Why aren't the usual Free Studies like what people think they want to enter for this? Hmm?

I dunno.

I haven't been here long, but the vibe I've gotten is that things don't change much, so bringing up ideas might not mean much 'round these parts, but... if people had the option to turn off the display of their Average Score they'd be more adventurous. People aren't only shooting for the challenge, but also for what their profile will look like. A high average is obviously coveted. Remove that average from the profile page (optional, of course, as viewing your challenge entry scores is optional) and I believe people will get more adventurous with their entries because there won't be any lasting penalty.

I'm not convinced about this challenge at all. Every challenge provides the opportunity to submit what you love; surely doing anything else is grotesque?

It might make sense if Don alone was judging the whole thing, but it will be decided by people who are just pretending to be Don. And the entries will nearly all be photographs taken by people pretending to know what the people pretending to be Don are just pretending to like best.

The posthumous ribbons aren't about doing what Don likes best, anyway. They are about doing what YOU like best. Get that part right, and the hearts and Dons will follow.

"The key to the kingdom IS the kingdom"?

You are, of course, correct that every challenge offers the opportunity to "submit what you love", but you know as well as I do that most people don't do that, and it's not surprising that they don't. No, the week-in-week-out "game" of DPC is to submit what you think will strike a responsive chord in the majority of voters. And, speaking for myself, I don't find that "grotesque" at all.

But then, I was a successful commercial photographer, so obviously I got some sort of satisfaction from fulfilling assignments :-) And an "assignment" like this one is a welcome departure from our usual brief. It's like my client said to me, "Go be yourself, knock me out! I'm ready for something out-of-the-ordinary!"

YIKES! Challenges like this one scare me and dangerously tempt me at the same time. What a risky business to produce a photo that will make Posthumous keel over with absolute glee while at the same time capturing a promising vote from the masses and still be a poetic expression of something that makes ME happy!

Count me in as a contender for THE HAT! ;-)

Well that depends on whether or not I have time to shoot my idea over the weekend. However, since I'm a nice guy... I'll let you win. Besides I already have one of those hats *cough*Leoneedstomakemoredesigns*cough*. ;) Seriously though, I doubt my idea would do well in the challenge so you're safe. :)

Strikes me as just a variation of the "In the style of" challenges, where we are trying to imitate what someone else does and end up with an interpretation of our own that the named member might not really find as their style.

Well we have been conditioned to just following directions. We can't seem to move an inch unless everything has been mapped out ahead of time.

I suspect those who do well, that is receive a number of favorites and comments from people who don't appear to be trapped in a persistent vegetative state (we still have some), will have been led by inspiration and not specification.

Haven't we all submitted grotesque photos at one time or another? Some of us have even gone through a "Grotesque Period" when we wallowed in grotesque. (However, not everyone has a photo of a 'sock-smelling-a-rose' on their profile page to serve as a not-so-gentle reminder)

cutout, zeuszen, tnun, gnarf; all are exceptions to the grotesque rule. They never seem(ed) to let competition influence their vision.

Let me see if I'm understanding this... I'm to shoot something that normally not many voters like, but make the voters like it?

uh huhh.... *shakes head in confusion*

If I were able to do that, I'd do it every week. I only have the first part down...

Don't let yanko lul you into a false sense of security. My early money is on yanko to win both a Posthumous AND a DPC ribbon in this challenge.

Too bad someone wasn't in your room taking your picture. A person typing on the computer with a blurry head could have been in the running for a posthumous ribbon...

Been reading this thread on and off through the day. I think my head is about to explode... (Quick, someone take a blurry, moody photo of it!)

I've got no idea what to do for the challenge. Same thing happened for the Fine Art challenge. Complete photographers block and i couldn't think of anything to do until last minute. Yikes! Too much freedom. Don't like it! I need the bars and cages to bang my head against guys!

Shhhhhh...don't tell...but I completely agree with you and my money is with YOUR money!

Unless, of course, Ursula, shows up...;-)
